A copy of Double D's SAMCC garrison carriage
« on: November 13, 2008, 05:06:58 AM »
The carriage was a lot of fun to build. I made the cheeks out of black walnut and the axles out of maple. As DD suggested, I mortised the axles into the cheeks, this is more like original construction and makes a stronger carriage. I made all of the steps in the cheeks the same height and length. I, also, made a stool bed and quoin instead of using an elevation screw. The small loose parts are easy to lose so I will later replace them with an elevating screw.

I decided to use a barrel that I cast last winter but had not finished. Unfortunately, the barrel was cast too close to finished size to allow removal of all imperfections left from the casting process. I, also, accidentally clamped one rimbase in the vice jaws while I worked on the opposite side which left permanent marks.

DD, please note black finish on carriage.

Max.

Once again, some exuisite work, you have my admiration and even a little envy in regards to your casting skills; skills, by the way, of which I so far have none (which probably causes the envy).

Beautiful!

Would it be safe to fire, or should it be left as a showpiece?

Thanks for the compliments Guys.

El Cazador 66, The dimensions of the carriage are per the drawings that Double D and George Gaskill posted here a while back. The cheeks are around 6.5 inches long and 2.4"  tall at the front. The front trucks are 1.75" tall and the rear 1.55. The barrel is 10.5" long.

Terry C., Sure it can be fired, but with a .50" bore it would require a light load to prevent it from turning end for end when fired.

Need to see some patina from powder residue.
Can't have this become a just a show piece!   ;D

Hey Max, don't let these guys bother you, they've evidently never heard of the aesthetic theory of art for art's sake.

Out with the quoin and in with the elevating screw. I like it better now.

I don't normally award Kewpies to unfinished projects, but if you paint this one you will forfeit your Kewpie.   ;)
