2 new Handi rifles... well kinda...
« on: December 04, 2008, 03:56:45 PM »
Well my camo laminate forend arrived yesterday from Brownells (smooth by the way, no checkering), and I started the stock shuffle.  In the end, I ended up using my two thumbhole stocks and shelving my synthetic set.

Top is my new .444 Marlin SS Ultra wearing my recently purchased camo laminate THS set.  Bottom is my 45/70 wearing the cinnamon laminate THS set originally on my Ultra .444.

Well, the 45/70 has already laid down a 140 lb. doe this season.  I have to get a scope for the .444 next, and I'm still looking around trying to find what I want.  I'm thinking about a scope with some kind of BDC reticle.  The Nikon Omega, pro-staff, Burris ballisticplex, etc.  I'm open to suggestion if anyone knows of a good bang for the buck scope.

Lookin good!! The Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 BDC($150) or the Omega BDC 250 ($210) would be good choices, I have the Omega on my 45-70 Ultra, the Prostaff on my .444.  ;)

Which do you prefer?  I like the eye relief of the Omega, and the price of the Prostaff....

I went a did the unthinkable...  I went to Cabelas at lunch today.  Online they had their .444 "calibrated" reticle Pine Ridge Lever-Action scope 50% off, normally $99 for $49.  5" eye relief, 3-9X40, tick marks for 100, 200, and 300 yards.  I know, I know, I probably will not be happy with it...  but for 1/5 the price of the Omega I have to try it!

If anyone else has had first hand experience with this particular Pine Ridge, I would love to hear your comments.

Keep us posted on how that works for ya.  I've looked at them in the catalog, but want to know who makes it and how it holds up.  DP

Yup, my review is on Cabela's, I gave it a big thumbs down(1 star) and returned it.  I bought it for the.444, first thing I noticed was the large black halo around the smallish field of view, typical of cheap scopes, although the glass was clear edge to edge. When I tried to center the reticle with a mirror, the elevation turrret bottomed out before I could get it close, I returned the scope without ever mounting it.  :-\

Centering the reticle with a mirror? That's a new one on me...can someone explain it to me, please?

I checked mine and it is centered from the factory.  Maybe you got a bunk one?  It does have a black halo around the picture, but the picture is clear.  So far I am pleased.  I'm going to try and sight it in tomorrow if possible.  I would not have bought it for $99 when the prostaff is so close in price...

I'm waiting for my forend from Brownell's right now. Did yours come with the plastic piece that butts up against the receiver? I have a survivor stock right now, and it's not removable.

The plastic piece is called a spacer, it should come with it, but some haven't from Brownell's, but if you call them, they'll send it to you along with the screws.
