Remington 700 Stainless Special 5-R MilSpec

I ran across an article on this gun and became interested.  Does any one have information on this gun.  I am i the market for a heavy barrel 308 for 600 yard competition and this sounds like a gun for my short list.

I've had that article bookmarked since 2005. Scott Powers says it "is probably the most accurate out-of-the-box .308 rifle I [S. Powers] have ever had the pleasure to shoot." He got some nice groups at 200 yards the day he tested the rifle, but I've never seen the targets or ever heard or read about anyone collaborating his story. Why should we believe the Mil-Spec is the most accurate .308 you can buy from only the opinion of one man - Scott Powers?

Swamper, that rifle is just a typical stainless short action model 700 (same one as the SS SPS) with a SS Remington made rifle cut barrel, all placed in a HS-Precision stock. The barrel on it is far from being of the quality of the aftermarket barrels that go on the real Military weapons. I'm not saying it's a bad rifle, in fact, I'd love to own one, but it just ain't all that.

The rifling is cut to US MilSpec.  Remington 700s are real military weapons.

It is all that if you want the most accurate .308 caliber rifle you can buy.

Nope, nope, it's not the most accurate, you're wrong Swamper. The Handi-Rifle in .308 is the most accurate. Then the Italian Carcano rebarreled to .30 cal, in .308 is the second most accurate (always has been). Then after that it's the TC G2 Contender Pistol with a 12" stainless steel, mil-spec, Remington barrel.  That's the way it is. ::)

I haven't fired one, but have handled the rifle and the "milspec" seems to be more marketing than anything else.  The rifle uses the same type of radiused rifling (5-R) as the M-24 Special Weapon System that Remington builds for the Army.  This is the standard Army sniper rifle.  The "milspec" references the military link.  There is a lot of debate about the barrel and it's origin.  It could possibly be a "reject" M-24 barrel or a production barrel using the same rifling. 

Now do not confuse this with the Marine's M-40 which is a whole other animal and will (at least from my research) out shoot the M-24 (granted, we are talking about a miniscule difference, but an inch or two at 1000yds is pretty big). 

Still, regardless of controversy or lack of information, I want one because everything I've read or heard speaks highly of the accuracy of the 5-R.

Surely, facts can be backed up by empirical data that shows that the Remington 700 is more accurate than any other production rifle in the world.  I'm sure we all would be most interested to see that data.  Personally I've shot more than one European rifle that would keep three shots in one ragged hole at 100m any time I've done my part and I don't consider myself a great shot.  My 30 year old Ruger 77 6mm will do so as well.  The AR-15 platform is consistently outshooting almost every other platform in competitions.  The Savage F-Class rifle is supposed to be outstandingly accurate.  The Steyr tactical rifles as well as the Blaser tactical rifles are quite well known for their capabilities around the world.

I'm not sure that there has ever been a shootoff of all the worlds brands, models, action types and chamberings.  Until such time, no one will ever know what is factually the world's most accurate rifle.  Until such time everything else is simply opinion.  You might be able to get away with the most accurate sub-$600, American made, bolt action rifle; but then again on any given day you might get beat by a Savage...

Strangely enough... my 700 SS will only shoot about 1.5 inches or so.  Of course I'm not a reloader.  I'm sure a reloader would be able to get this down to world class accuracy in the .3's or so.
My Tikka T3 will shoot under an inch with the only load I have ever shot in it, Federal Power-Shock 150's.

You don't need to be a reloader to amke a Remington shoot.  Remington factory ammo works just fine.

Other brands can be made to shoot.  You don't have to do that work with a Remington.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... I know GB.  But I just couldn't help myself this time...  It's so much fun to pester Swampy a little bit.  More than a page or two of posts gets really tiresome though.  Besides, I'm not argueing too much.  I just want him to back up his claims with hard data.  Shouldn't be too much to ask now should it?
