Quick release scope mounts
« on: December 11, 2008, 02:56:02 AM »
I have a T/C Prohunter in .243 with a leupold VX-L 3x9 scope, I've been thinking of getting a new barrell in .270.  I love the scope, but just can't see myself spending another $900.00 on another one right now.  Anyone out there have experience with the Leupold quick release mounts?  With the ballistics being somewhat simular between the .243 and the .270, I'm hoping that any scope adjustments would be small if any, but alittle concerned with accuracy.

I started using them when I got my rifle. With the four barrels I've got scope movement was disappointing but acceptable for me. Once sighted return to the barrel was what i had wanted as long as you remember or log down the adjustments. This system is no better or worse than any other removable mounts. It still requires slight readjustment when its placed back on the barrel of choice. Accuracy has been fine with no movement after adjustment. While I still check the levers between shots I have yet to find one loose or seeming to move. This is shooting calibers such as 300 win. mag. and 45/70. Like you I couldn't afford to buy scopes for all the barrels I have without risking divorce. This system I have found better than any of the weaver type removables. The only thing I have found wanting was a windage centering adjustment which means using the scope sometimes alot which is why I was disappointed with the quality control of T/C and Leupold.
My two cents worth.

The Leupold QD mount is their weakest mount, but should give you good service on the barrels you mention.  It is the most precise of the mounting systems I have tried, but I don't feel right without shooting paper before going hunting after removing and remounting the scope.  If you are good with that it may be the system for you.

I have Leu. QD on my '06 encore. It holds up but I only remove the scope after season so once a year.
I like my Stratton base with Warne QD on my 223 encore beacause the scope cost me alot more. It is solid and easier to remove. Not worried about breaking the Leu. levers off, my biggest fear.

I see the weakness in the Leupold QD mount as the posts the rings mount to.  I have seen a couple of them shear under heavy recoil.  The precision of this connection makes it one of the better at coming close to returning to zero.  I know there are those who don't agree with me, but with any of these mounts to truly know if you are close enough to satisfy you the guns need to be shot on paper before hunting.

I use Leupold QR mount and rings on my Encore muzzel loader switching from 1X for Utah regs. to 3X9 when hunting out of state. If barrel has NOT been switched on frame going from one scope to the next no change in zero. That being said even with my 3 rifle barrels each have there own scope mounted. When switched on frame some small adjustments are required! So even if you had a scope for each barrel you would still need to adjust for zero after barrel change.

I knew that there would need to be at the very least a few "verification of zero" shots, no matter what.  My main concern was there ability to hold zero once established on each barrell.  Where I live in central Tx a well placed shot with the .243 is sufficient, but having the opportunity from time to time to go to S. TX for larger whitetail or Axis deer, the ability to switch barrells, do the scope switcheroo, make a couple of shots and head out appeals to me from a $ stand point.  I am more concerned with how they "hold zero" once zeroed.

Heck, I might just buy another scope for myself for Christmas.  Either way, I know there will always be the need to verify zero.

Thanks for ya'll's input.

A lot of folks use them and like them.  I am not a fan of any of them.  Folks see them on TV shows where someone puts a rifle together out of a briefcase, put a scope on with quick release rings of some kind and make a 600 yard shot.  Even at shorter distances a small difference at the mount makes a big difference at the target.  If you are going to use them you have to be real focused on doing the attaching the same way each time, and I still recommend checking the poi on paper before counting on the gun to hit game.  At least test enough to satisfy yourself that it is close enough for you.

I tried Leupold QD rings on an Encore 375 H&H Mag. barrel and they didn't last too long.

For Encores & Contenders I've gone to Warne Maxima bases with their QD rings which have given me excellent service in up to 25/06 Rem. cartridge sizes.  I haven't used them in cartridges with greater recoil yet but anticipate no problems.

I used the Warne all-steel quick detachable mount on my encore 30-06. It holds zero but I use it on the same barrel to switch between  2 scopes (1-4 Leupold & 2.5-10 Nikon) depending on the area I hunt and to provide a backup scope.

I use the Warne QD Maxima rings and bases.  Haven't taken one off and replaced it to check zero, but they are rock solid and to me that is worth the money.

If it was me I would buy a scope I could afford for the second barrel. Much more likely to have some sort of disaster from moving a scope from one to the other than from using a cheap scope. You think now you will only be changing once or twice a year, but what about load development and practice and all the shooting you do in the off season? If it means changing the scope are you just going to neglect the second barrel?

I can get attached to guns, I never have become attached to a scope. I have one Leopold on my go to rifle, and all my others wear lesser scopes, and they all give me good service. I never even consider using the Go to gun because it has an expensive scope on it.

So you are one of those guys that only have a second barrel?  I won't tell you how many barrels I have but will tell you that if I had to buy a separate scope for every barrel my gun safe would be overflowing rather than almost overflowing.

Warne Maxima bases have the same groove spacing for both the Encore and Contender versions so I can switch scopes with both Encore and Contender barrels.  There is no loss of zero in detaching/reattaching a scope with Warne QD rings.  With the Warne QD rings, when you change a scope to another barrel, rezeroing is needed but doesn't take long if your scope has target knobs like many of mine do.  If you have a good scope, you can record the known settings and switch scopes between barrels and rezero them just by adjusting the setting back to where they were.

Besides not having to buy 20 or 30 scopes to put on your barrels, having scopes on QD mounts makes travel with scopes easier.  There is less strain on the scope/scope mount if you can take it off the gun for airline travel.  Best of all, you don't have to shoot any of your barrels with the cheap not so good scopes.
