« on: December 03, 2008, 06:36:10 AM »
in kentucky visiting my parents and took a trip to the one their local gun shops today.was looking for a good deal on a handi rifle or buffalo classic.was looking through their gun racks and there it was a used H&R target rifle 38-55.she was just calling my name and i couldnt resist the temptation.it didnt have a price tag on it so ask how much guy said $325 w/1box of ammo out the door.i said well consider it sold ;D ;D ;D.even got the front sight inserts and a hard sided gun case.i was hoping it was buffalo classic when i first saw it but i'm happy with the target rifle.i can always send it in and have the BC barrel fitted.will post pics after i get back home tonight.

Congrats, great price!! ;) Now do a little research on it so you can get it to shoot good, there's a great article link in the FAQs on it.

Yep that is a great price. I'll bet there's even some folks around that would take that Target barrel off your hands so you could finance the new .45-70 barrel.

i believe i'm going to hang on to the 38-55 barrel.i shot a few rounds of winchester factory 255gr through it today but when i checked the target i found the bullets were tumbling and hitting sideways.well my dad had few extra rounds for marlin 336 cowboy that he loaded with cast bullets from his lee moldi beleive they're 250gr.fired three shots and went to check the target.all 3 shots were in 1" group and 2 inches high at 50yds.we came to the conclusion that the bore is probally a lil to loose for the factory loads.so i guess i'm going to have to put a bullet mold and some other misc. stuff on wish list for christmas ;D

Seems pretty common that the bores of the 38-55 are a little large. I think that the common wisdom here on this forum is to slug the barrel and then cast or size your rounds from there. Congrats on the EXCELLENT deal.. Good Shooting..

That sound perfectly normal for H&R .38-55s Mine likes the .380/ .381 hardcast best 250grs seems to be the best wieght also. They shoot well but take some learning to get good loads for them. Do a search and you'll find alot on them.

After shooting Haywires .375 win that eskimo now has I've desided to spend more time with mine this summer, I am gonna have the chamber recut to axcept .380 bullets better and shorten it a few inches to make it a little faster handling, Scope it and put a set of monte carlo stocks on it.

This round can really hit a whitetail hard, Ian's impressed me with how well it performed on that buck I shot with it last year.

Good luck with your new rifle.

BTW where you at in Kentucky? 8)
