A new toy for me too....260 Rem
« on: August 12, 2003, 01:22:17 AM »
Well, I did it again this time I bought a factory TC Encore, 15 inch, blued barrel chambered in 260 Rem  .  As far as I know these were only made for the 1st year when the Encore came out, I have read so many good things about the 6.5 mm in Contenders and Encores and also about the 308 Win in Encores that I figured if you cross the two it should be really really good :) .  I had decided some time ago to get a 260 Rem, but was thinking I would get a custom barrel from OTT - since I had read many good things about them but never tried them out, and kind of wanted a stainless barrel.  Well the chance at this factory barrel complete with dies at a reasonable price came along and I just could not resist.  I went through my reloading data the other night regarding this round and could not find anything.

So is anyone else shooting the 260 Rem in an Encore pistol?  What factory and/or hand loads are working well with yours?  How is overall performance of the round?  Which reloading manuals have load info for the 260 Rem?  I kind of thought this would be the "ultimate antelope pistol", and am planning on setting it up with one of the 3-12 Burris scopes, and maybe a bipod.  Any imput or opinions welcome  :D .

congratulations! when i bought my 15" 7-08, i could have just as easily bought a .260, that is if they still made it in factory form. the two best hunting rounds in any gun, period   :) . get you a hodgdon annual manual, i'm pretty sure there is data in it, but i don't have it right here with me. the burris 3x12 sits on my 7-08 also, and it's great. if you were in need of more, low power field of view, then the 2x7 model would be the choice.
hey, when you find the best loads(factory or reloads)come and fill us in on how it does. check out www.bearbasin.com for the burris scope. i'm thinking thats about the cheapest i've seen. :D

Hello Big Gun,

I'm sure your 260 Rem will be a great rig!  Since I'm a terrible shot, I cheat and use every little bit of help I can get to be able to hit my targets and this is what I have come up with.

When you use an extra-long forend with a bipod positioned out near the end of the forend, you reduce the amount of error caused by horizontal radius movement, therefore giving a greater chance for making successful longer shots.  I also have my triggers done which tends to reduce movement errors induced by me when I'm actually pulling the triggers.  This system is very easy to use whether making long shots with a rest, or when flipping the bipod's legs up for closer shooting.  If you want to see some real improvement in your shooting, use this system and index your cases when you reload - you will be astounded.  I keep preaching these methods, but generally my suggestions fall on deaf ears.  It works if you do it.

Here are a couple of pictures of the way I set all my T/C guns up, whether they are Contenders or Encores.  Maybe they will be useful to you as you decide what is best for your own needs.

This setup has helped me a lot, I actually hit a few things now and then.  My forends are all laminated and they come from both Virgin Valley and Bullberry.  I have hangar-bars on all but one forend and the hangar-bars have all been glass-bedded into the forends for stability and rigidity.  One Encore forend I have (it's the light-stained laminate forend above on the .223 Encore) is pillar-bedded and I like that system very well too - it's a lot less work if you have it done by whoever you get the forend from (that's a good thing if you're in a hurry) and it's relatively inexpensive.

I hope this information is helpful.  Please let us know how you decide to set up your gun, we are all interested in learning some new approaches and tactics that we can steal, errrr, use for our own shooting needs.

Safe and good shooting to you!   :D
