Most accurate sabot slug style/brand?
« on: November 30, 2008, 03:26:57 PM »
I have an 870 20 guage with a fully rifled barrel. It shoots the plain old Winchester rifled slugs(Foster style) reasonably well up to around 50+ yards. I love hunting with this gun, but I keep hearing fellows talking about getting 2"-3" :o groups at 100 yards from rifled slug barrels, and I'd love to get that kind of accuracy, or anything even close would be great.

A fellow told me the other day that I needed sabot slugs to get any real accuracy. I'd have figured the plain slugs should've done pretty good, but I'm new at the slug stuff, so can you offer me any good suggestions?

Thanks!

What I found is, every rifled shotgun I have used, likes certain slugs and will get great accuracy with one or maybe two.

My Remington 1100 gets 2 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards with the Remington solid copper slugs. 2 3/4 inch
My Baretta Extream gets 2 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards with Lightfield slugs 2 3/4 inch.
My Remington 870 Wingmaster with a hastings rifled barrel also shoot the Lightfields very well, about 3 inch groups at 100 yards.
I am going to the range with my Encore barrel with lightfields, I have shot it at 25 yards, and I just get one ragged hole, so it is out to the range to do some 100 yard shooting with it.

I have shot a bunch of different shotguns, and it is just trial and error to find what shoots best in each.
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

I agree each gun likes different slugs. My Benelli likes Federal 3/4oz Barnes expanders 100% copper. This will be the first year using them as I wasn't completely happy with the Hornaday SST's they would shoot 3" groups a 100 and so do the Barnes Saboted slugs.

There's another reason to use sabot slugs in a rifled barrel.  The foster style rifled slugs are a soft lead and it easily fouls up the lands and grooves in the barrel.

I have a Remington 870 with a Hastings barrel.  Last year I shot the Hornady SST slugs with good results, but I switched for this season.  I now shoot 2-3/4" Winchester Partition Gold sabot slugs. I switched for a few reasons, 1) I hunt in really thick woods so I wanted a heavier slug. 2) I've heard they have excellent knock down power and are very accurate. 3) They only had 20 gauge SST's at Gander Mountain when I went to buy slugs :)

I have my gun sighted in at 50 yards because I most likely shoot past that because of how thick the woods is.  With the Winchesters I get 1-1/2 to 2 inch groups at 50 yards. And they have devastating deer performance ;D
