Put a scope on my 45/70

Last February I purchased a brand new 45/70 Handi with extractor.I shot it some and it is a good one.Ever since then I have been looking for "the scope" for this rifle.Not just any scope but"the scope".The one optic that I felt would be the best for both the 45/70 and for me.I knew I would know when I saw it.
Last week on another forum a gent in Georgia had some older Weaver El Paso scopes for sale.These are my mostest favoritest scopes.I have a 1.5X4.5X20 that I've used for 30 years.It's been rebuit once.To me these are the best scopes ever built.So I contacted him and bought a 2-1/2 fixed power with single horizonal crosshair and vertical post.This scope was made somewhere around the mid 1970's and had never been mounted on a firearm.It arrived very well packed today and I was like a kid on Christmas morning.It is perfect!Not any kind of mark on it and clear as a bell glass.
I got busy in the shop and now the scope sits on it's high mounts on the 45/70 and looks great.
It will be about another month before the doctor clears me to shoot again having had heart bypass surgery in June of this year but I am really looking forward to shooting this one.

Nice choice Stan, sounds like the Weaver K2½x20 that I have on a 45-70 Handi too!!

I too have some of the K 2.5's and like em alot.  For hunting the low powered scopes make lots of sense, gives me a good aim point cause the eyes don't see sights so good.  Brings em in a little closer but not so much I can't tell if I'm looking at the front or back end.  Got a K 1.5 on a Trapper that is about the quickest thing this side of a red dot.  DP

I've hunted with a 2-7x on my 308 BLR for over 20yrs, I can only recall( ::)) a few times that I've used the scope on anything but 2x to take game. I've got a bunch of Handis with 2-7x variables on them, I've never hunted with them on any setting other than 2x, it's always worked well. For longer shots, I've always had time to change the power ring on the few occasions that I needed to, but having that low power field of view and quick target aquisition can make all the difference between having track soup or liver and onions for dinner sometimes!!  :o ;D

Stan, an old Weaver 1.5X4.5X20 is still on my Marlin 336 in .35 Remington where it has sat for 20 years or so and is my all time favorite hunting scope for the northeast. Mine has a fogging issue now and has never been rebuilt. I almost sent it out one time but don't even know if they still rebuild them. Just wanted you to know I have the same scope and it's one of my favorites also. I also have a couple other old Weavers, a 4x and 6x and they are great scopes....Merry CHRISTmas buddy and congratulations on your "new" Weaver....<><....:)

Here's the latest source I know of that repairs El Paso made Weavers. Ruiz Optics used to do them, but he closed up shop.

MSPRet,when Weaver in El Paso closed up there was a long time employee who started his own company,Weaver Scope Repair,which rebuilt Weaver scopes.Last year he retired and closed his doors.My 1.5X4.5X20 sat on my Marlin 336 for many years until I took it off to sell the rifle.The scope now sits on my custom .303British sporter.I also have an older Mossberg .243 with which I killed my first deer in 1975.It has a Weaver K6 on it.This .243 ,incidentally ,was the one I inherited from my deceased friend two years ago.
