Remington 11-87 Not cycling
« on: August 16, 2003, 08:42:48 PM »
Came across a great deal on a Remington 11-87 Special Purpose in 23/4" and 3", with 30" bbl. a couple of weeks back. Hadn't seen a great deal of use and the price was very right. I know the problems the 11-87 has with cycling very light target loads in 23/4" shells (unless you have trap barrel) but just can't get this shotgun to cycle any 23/4 loads reliably. I detailed stripped the gun, cleaned the gas ports, trigger assembly, etc... It was the cleanest it has been since it left the factory. There we no broken parts and no missing seals, etc... yet it still won't cycle properly. This one has got me scratching my head. Anyone else encounter this kind of problem with the 11-87? I have another one that I purchased new and it will cycle just about anything, but this other one.... I'm stumped.

Assuming it works ok for 3" loads, check the gas relief valve on the barrel and make sure the metal band that seals the ports is in place.  This band releases the additional port pressure from 3" loads, but is supposed tp remain a bit more closed for lessor pressure shells.

For the 3.5" 11-87 SuperMag, there is an accessory ring called a Barrel Seal Activator to close off the gas relief valve when using 2 3/4" rounds.  Don't know if it would solve the problem, or whether the problem relates to something binding in the action.

You might want to check with Remington - their customer service is top notch. I bought my 11/87 twelve years ago, and it has never failed to cycle with any kind of shell from dove loads to 3" turkey loads.

Since you have two 11-87's, have you tried swapping barrels to see if the problem is in the receiver, or in the barrel?  Might narrow down your search.
