Handi 1st big game kill

My 270 ultra comp got it's first elk this morning!!  ;D

Second day of the hunt.  1st light and a cool 19 degrees.  Approach
a tank surrounded by pinon and juniper trees when I catch a glimpse
of a couple cow elk getting ready to drink.  About 80-90 yards.. We see
other at about the same time, so I steady the handi and put one right
behind the shoulder of the biggest cow.   She took off and ran about
75 yards and dropped. Hunt over!  Meat for the freezer!!!  :D

One happy handi-owner (and family!!)

what grain bullet did you use?

Way to go!  I spent another year waiting for the "Lets go" call for my elk hunt.  Didn't happen again this year. :'(  Still a great season, though. ;)  DP

Longtom, I used a 130 gr Sierra SBT with
59 grains of H4831.  1 gr below max..
My gun was getting groups 5/8"-3/4" with
this load...

Slufoot - it was a very big cow... I wish
I could have weighed her.  I was guessing
350-375 pounds or so live weight...

Was definitely the biggest cow I'd seen through
all preseason scouting.  Lot's of meat for the winter!!

FYI - I don't know where in VA you guys
are, but I was wearing my UVA ballcap from
a visit to Charlottesville.   I've got some
family up in Harrisonburg too...  Beautiful
state!
