need stock trap door for parts storage
« on: November 26, 2008, 10:44:06 PM »
I recently bought my son a Savage .22 rifle with an accutrigger.

I also installed a scope that requires me to remove the rear sight elevator.

I'm afraid I'll lose these small parts.  It would be nice to keep them with the rifle.  I'm looking for some way to make a storage pocket in the stock with a secure closure.  I've seen where fancy custom rifles have a spare front sight pocket in the pistol grip cap, and some military rifles have a trap door in the butt stock.

Can anybody tell me where I might find a trap door that I could inlet into my son's rifle? I couldn't spot anything in my Brownell's but could be overlooking something there.

 Happy Thanksgiving.

Personally if it were me I would do one of three things and I have done both.

1.  Nowadays someone in the house probably takes medication.  I save all pill bottles, and they come in various sizes, and put parts in these and put a lable on the bottle
indicating the rifle, the part and the date.  I have one spot in my shop were all these are placed.

2. You can remove the buttplate, an if the part is not too big, use a drill bit (I like the foredoms, and drill hole in the buttstock to hold the parts.  Use cotten or cleaning patch
to keep them from rattling around.   You need to use a little care to make sure you don't drill thru the stock but is is easier and takes much less work than creating
a pocket and then having to inlet a cap to hold the parts in.

3,  inlet pocket in the forend of the rifle and then use a little piece of brass to make a cover to go over it and screw it in place.

Personally I prefer option #1 best but have used 2 on occassion with #3 being a last resort unless the rifle has a synthetic stock with lightening pockets already molded into the forend.

Good luck..

Thanks, I'll probably do the under butt plate solution but was hoping to find a source for an easier to open container than having to unscrew the butt plate.

The one I got from Brownells goes on the underside of the buttstock.
It is designed to hold 4-5 rds of ammo in holes drilled for each cartridge, BUT it could be easily modified to be just a pocket for small parts.

DonT's #2 is probably what I would do, though.

Hope this helps
