I have visited Eglin AFB many years ago, but I don't remember any squirrels.

Its probably too many cats running free and no one doing anything about it.

Cat people feel its no problem if their sweet fluffy runs around outside, even though domestic cats kill everything they can catch.

I spent 4 years in Italy and there were zero squirrels to speak of, but tons of cats roaming the streets.

never hunted there but  i ahve been by there......are there lots of longleaf pines around whre your are hunting.?.....if there are then there should be scirus niger niger  there...southeastern fox squirrel which is less common than grays......grays you will not find many in the big longleafs and the southeeasent fox squirrel has a home range of over 50 acres......the fox squirrell around there ranges up into ga, eastern al. sc, nc and very se va.........another subspeices of fox squirrle is in middle al. to la.,,,,,,2 more subspecies in florida.............should be fox squirrles there in the big pines and grays along the streams......
also florida has 1 more tree squirrel.(not counting flying).....the mexigan gray squirrle on elliot key........black and you cannot hunt them..........mack

Come down south more Richloam is full of squirrels and citrus has tons of fox squirrels. I know you can't shoot the fox squirrel in Florida. God made cats for target practice.

yup, sounds like lots of longleaf pines, and scrub oak(turkey and blacjackoak)....that is ideal fox squirrel habitat but like i said they have a home range of 50 acres whereas a gray has a lot smaller range,.......if you cannot hunt fox squirrels there then you need to get along some of the creeks to find the grays....mack
