RECOVERED CANNON BULLETS
« on: December 11, 2008, 05:15:58 AM »

Here are two cannon bullets that we dug up at a cannon shoot this summer, in southwest NE. The first bullet is fired from a 3" full size civil war cannon made by Scott Harris of Co. It's weight is 11+ lbs. and is pushed by 18 oz. of black powder! this round was recovered at the 940 yd barrel. we had to dig it up after following a trench over 6ft long and about 12" deep. If you look at the butt you see it is sq. and has no fire cutting. this is most important for good accuracy, you also see good upset of the bullet by the rifling marks left on the sides. Scott hit the 55gal. barrel twice, once upright and the second when it was laying down with just the end showing

    .

The second bullet was recovered at 600yds. shot out of a scaled model civil war cannon. It is 2" weight is 3lbs. and pushed by 3+ oz. black powder It was made by Bill Steinke of NE. He made it 40 years ago, all hand made from parts found on his farm. if you look you see his bullet is sq. butt and no flame cutting and good rifling on the side, his rifling is not as deep as scotts, thats is the way he rifled the barrel. He and others were shooting at five gal. barrels at 600yds. and they all hit some. we dug this one out of the hill side it was in about 2 feet.

   .

Here is Bill ( fore ground) Scott ( back ground) .

   shot barrel at 600yds.

  .

Smooth bore  by Lyle Hutchens & Delbert Beins both from NE.

.

bowling ball mortar by Judy Beins from NE.

   .

my wife ( Rosemary ) cleaning our 5" Cohorn mortar.

It goes to show you that these cannons are very accurate and don't be standing down range when they go off!

Thats very interesting ! Is the second bullet cast or machined? Is it hollow based , what is protrouding from the base ? What is it made of , to the grab the rifling like it did?

Both are cast they are both flat base. the smaller one he screws a cuped plastic wad to the base, what you see is the screw that holds it in place, the big one is not lead but a mixed metal make up, I don't know how Scott makes his. Bill's is rough casted then he swaged them, then turns the grease groves in them. It's made from pure lead.

Gerald -

Thanks for posting these - it's not often one get the chance to recover such examples of large bore projectiles - especially at the ranges involved.

Tim? thanks it' my pleasure. you can't beleve how much turf we had to dig just to find these bullets, a lot of them burrowed thru the ground and then angled up  and out. who knows where they landed, not to worry they had plenty of cannon left to land.

Rocklock--- don't know what you relating to? the smooth bore ( dekbert& lyle's) shoots a round ball that they cast, It's only acurate to 200yds, before the ball decides to hook or curve. at 400 yds. it is a hit and miss type of thing. Scotts and Bills cannons are rifled.

To me it looks as though there is no breech on the parrot ,just a straight bore right out the back ???? maybe it's just me .

I was wondering the same thing about the Parrott.

Looks like the Parrott has a screw-off breech plug that's removed for easier cleaning.  The guy looking in the breech has a wire brush in his hand, so it would seem that he's about to clean the bore.

All of the cannons you see have breech plugs, this is for good cleaning and helps to spot leading when it happens,  this also makes shure of no embers are left in the bore.

I like screw-off breech plugs too.  It solves the problem of possible hidden corrosion in the breech plug area.
