M77 RLS .308 w/ open sights
« on: December 04, 2008, 03:42:43 AM »
Ruger says it was in production in 1990 but will not tell me how many were produced. I can't find any others like it to compare it to. Ultra light, factory sights, black forend, new safety. Is this a low production or are people just not selling any? And why can't Ruger tell me production numbers? When I asked, all they would tell me is " company policy".

No gun manufacturer will ever publicize their production numbers to anyone outside their company, any more than most people would broadcast their own personal information.

The Ultralight M77RL's were made for several years, in both Mark I & your Mark II model(s), with the sighted RLS variation generally available & in several calibers (long & short) - but none in anywhere near the numbers of regular production M-77's.

What do you want to compare ?

Just wondered what the approximate value might be or what they would be currently selling for.

Here in New England, they seem to be tagged about $50-$100 more than a standard M77RS in comparable condition.

I've usually been able to buy them for $350-$450 in the past, but haven't bought one in the last 4-5 years.
Today, I would expect to pay closer to $500 for one in excellent condition, bareback.

IMO, they're an excellent value, for a 6lb centerfire factory rifle - for which a shooter used to have to had custom-made with pencil barrels and swiss-cheesed actions for very big bucks, indeed, as late as the 1970's & 80's.
That demand for lightweights is how the ULA (Ultra Light Arms/Rifle) got it's initial spark.

Sounds like I've got something similar, an M77 RSI in .308W. 18 1/2" barrel and Manlicher(sp?) stock. The only way anyone can get it from me is to kill me!  :P

The M77RSI (lower rifle, below) weighs the same, with it's 18 1/2" bbl, as an RL or RLS with it's 20" bbl - about 6lbs, bareback.

Ranger44, nice rifles!  The M77RLS carbine has basically the RSI action & sighted 18-1/2" barrel in a ultralight stock with black forend tip. The RLS carbines were introduced in 1987 in .243 & .308 SA calibers and .270 & .30-06 LA calibers. Your right on about the production numbers being relatively few. By the end of production in 1992, only the LA calibers were available & the SA calibers are more rare and collectable. I've seen the current value anywhere from $600.00 to almost $1,000.00, depending upon condition & caliber.
