reloading T/C .32 H&R Mag for .308 bullets
« on: October 31, 2008, 08:09:07 AM »
I'm sure there is an easy answer but with the shell at .312 and the bullet at .308 I have to narrow the shell mouth to .307 and I'm somewhat lost as to the easiest way to accomplish this.  The die set I have are for .32 H&R mag by Dillon.
some direction would be appreciated.
thanks

Change out the expander ball on your decapping pin.  Use a .308 decapper instead of the .311.  If you are loading cast bullets, you likely will not have to bell the case mouth.  My load is taylored to just fit the bullet.  Minor compression and it crimps right in place.

Good luck and enjoy the 32.

fools gold,

Let me be the first to say Welcome to Graybeard Outdoors.

You should be able to change the sizing button in the diameter you need.

I would call Dillion an ask if they can send you a smaller sizing button.

Thank you for the replies.
Your input is very much appreciated.
Now to work up some loads, at least in a few days as I have the Loadbook series in route to me.
I am starting with some Sierra 85 gr. in .308 but I haven't come up with a lead bullet.
I did shoot the Federal LRN and they worked well but like I said I haven't come up with an equivalent.

What are you planning on useing your T/C in field pistol ? Is so then the 85 th 110 fgn bullets will be fine. When looking for lead bullets  consider the shiping costs as well, there are several sources of cast bullets listed in the cast bullet section, when figuring costs look at the 110 gn RN bulk bullets.

As a follow up to my posting, I received my copies of Loading for the T/C that confirmed the good information I received on this board.
I dismantled my sizing die and used a caliper to measure the expansion button and found it to be undersized.
Feeling optimistic I ran a test case through the die and I was pleased that a .308 now sits perfect for placement.
I don't understand Dillion's manufacturer undersizing but it worked out well for me.
Now to work up some loads starting with an 85 gr. bullet.
I had some input that 5 gr. of No. 5 will do just fine.  I think I'll work with it and some Unique and see who fares best.
My end use is FP
thanks again for the input

5gr of #5 is a good load.  You may try small pistol and small rifle primers to see if one works better than the other for you.  Unique is also good and measures well.  Enjoy the 32.

I use 5gr of AA#5 with a 113gr Lee cast bullet. It is supposed to be a GC bullet but it shoots great through my 10" barrel without a GC. I get 1 1/4" average group size at 100 yards.
good luck and have fun.

I have picked up some 115 gr. lead bullets in .308.  I also have several powders among which are Unique and AA5 and 7.  I am awaiting delivery of a Chronograph so that I'm not totally guessing my results.  Certainly a load of 5 grains of AA5 has gotten many votes so it will be among the first loads that I will test.
I will certainly share my results with all.  Really just waiting on a break in the weather and like I said, the arrival of my latest toy.
I do have a question regarding seating depth.  Almost every guide, even those dedicated to T/C calls for a max of 1.350 but dropping an unseated round in the T/C indicates that this can be lengthened to touch the rifling and then perhaps back off a bit.
Am I correct that the guide is just that and I can feel somewhat confident that the bullet seating depth/overall length isn't critical?
This may well come into play with some 125gr. Sierra's I purchased in .308 to also experiment with.
All comments will be appreciated.

The Sierra 110hp with 5 grains of #5 is one of the better field pistol loads.  I seat my bullets so they have about .010" jump to the rifling.  My 32 mag with RCBS 165 Sil bullet is quite the sight.  Visble bullet is almost as long as the case.  Seat them out so you minimize the jump to the rifling.

thanks for the input on seating depth.  Just more playing with loads.  Until I get a break in the weather here in southern Oregon I will simply be making up more variations.

This is very addicting.

I checked the temperature back home in KFalls this morning.  Only 23 degrees with freezing rain.  Not a bad day for shooting down there.  Will be a little nicer on the Rogue Valley side of the hill.

Some guys shoot the 125s, 150s, etc.  I was shooting the RCBS 165 silhouette cast bullet in front of some AA1680.  Used to take most animals real well.  I think I last shot it in Grants Pass at one of the West Coast championships.  It rang a couple of rams so it is collecting dust.  They are very versatile and fun to shoot.

Enjoy your barrel and the addicition.....it has only just begun...... :o
