.22 hornet with 18" inch barrel?
« on: December 06, 2008, 05:31:00 PM »
Hi, first post here. I found a .22 hornet handi rifle at a gunshop with an 18" barrel. It has a "Schnabel" forearm and a scope mount. I'm not familiar with the various versions of these guns, and was wondering if this was cut down  or  came this way from the factory? It Is very "handi" feeling. I was also interested in knowing how the short length would effect with the .22 hornet cartridge's ballistics ? thanks, woody

Everything I see listed for the 22 hornet is in 22" so I would assume it has been cut down.  Not sure how it would affect accuracy as I don't have a 22 hornet.

Just out of curiosity, and no intention to hi jack this thread, but will barrels found at gun shops and show fit right on the Handi's and function?  Is so, why do we have to send in our receivers to have barrels fitted?  If we could just call up and order barrels, at the price NEF sells them at, they could probably sell them cheaper because of reduced labor (no fitting), I would probably have ordered 1/2 of the offered barrels by now.

If you have enough frames, you can try to see if they fit one you have.   I have 17 frames now and can get a barrel to fit on something, then have to mark it to which frame it fits.  DP

It could be a Superlight too which originally comes with a 20" barrel. If it looks like a bull barrel, it's a cut down 22" Handi, if it's much lighter in contour, it's probably a Superlight.

The barrel is 18" long and tapers to 5/8" The target crown looked about the same as another .22 hornet handi rifle there. The blueing looks the same too. I like it. Reminds me of  a savage 24c but lighter.
