Anyone use remington 120gr. HP In 7mm08
« on: November 02, 2009, 01:05:38 PM »
Hey guys my dad just brought in a real sweet stainless synthetic model 7.  It came with 2 boxes of remington core lokt 120gr. HP.  They shoot very well but I was wondering if this was a varmit class bullit for this caliber?  I have stuff ready to reload for him , like Hornady sp, speer, and nosler.  But he was wanting me to see what ya'll thought about those 120 gr. hp.  Also straight out of the box I put 3 handloaded 168 gr. berger vld''s through it and they went into 3/4 in.  This seems like its gonna be a great little gun.

There was a discussion in deer hunting forum awhile back where I asked the same question. As I recollect one person used it for broadside lung shots only and reported it did the job just fine but would shy away from other shots (e.g. frontal etc). A HP bullet is quite a bit more frangible than the usual soft point which is ideal for varmints but not for bigger critters, particularly if you're looking for a blood trail. Most people (myself included) use the 139/140 grain SP for deer and invariably have good reports. It is a fine round and is great in a short action rifle.

the remington 120 gr hp have a real low BC so its not that flat of a shooter.
If you reload I would go with the nosler 120 gr BT. Thats what I am loading but havent shot anything with it as this gun is brand new. but loaded to 3200 fps its a flat shooting mo fo

Been using the Rem 120's since I got my Model 7 back in the early 90's . Never had a Texas whitetail move as much as a step after being hit with one.longest shot was in the 250 yard range.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  I've never been a HP person myself.  And usually I prefer softpoints over polymer tips just cause it seems more old school.  I also shot it again today with the 139 gr Hornady BTSP and they shot awesome, I figure thats what he will choose.  But I also have some grand slams, CT Bal silvertips, partitions, and accubonds leftover from a 7 mag I use to have. So I'm gonna try and see what his gun will do.  The only thing I hate is the berger 168's won't fit in the clip I have to load them one at a time but they sure are accurate.  When I had a ruger 7 mag I shot these and they would feed through the clip.  I've just always wanted to see what they would to to game.  They seem pretty wicken on The Best of The West tv show.

If those balistic silvertips have a black coating on them I wouldnt shoot those. They say once you use them you cant ever go back to copper bullets, thats what I have heard anyways.

Horse pucky!  I have used the Ballistic Silvertips in my 280's and shot Accubonds and Interbonds after with out any problems.  Same thing with the Win. FailSafes which are also coated with the same black coating in my 7mm-08s, no problems with regular bullets after.  Now, Myth-Busters is over. ::)  DP

Have never used anything less than 139 gr in my 7mm-08.
I reload with Hornady 139 gr SSTs. They are Awesome on deer.

Not sure about this particular bullet, but when I started reloading my 7-08 Tikka, the Sierra folks recommended their 120 gr bullet.  Of course, I told that I shoot mostly 100-150 lb AL whitetails.  Some are bigger but some are smaller  ;)
I also have a load that uses their Sierra 140 gr bullets.  Both shoot close to same spot and are about 200 fps different.
