Nutralizing coyote stomache acids??
« on: December 04, 2008, 12:32:46 PM »
Is there a way to do this if I'm putting up raw fur {skinned & frozen} ??? I had one about 3 yrs ago
and someone told me even frozen the acids from the stomache will ruin the hide so I pulled it out and sure enough it did.Is there something to nutralize this from happening?

Yes, Sodium bicarbonate AKA Baking soda.

It will neutralize the acid very well. It's hard to tell you just how much to use, about 5-6 table spoons per gallon of warm water should do it well. Soak it well and you'll see it bubble up, don't worry it is just the hydrogen from the acid getting stripped from the acid. After it stops bubbling, rinse it well and let it soak again in a new batch of water and BS. if it starts bubbling again, repeat until you see no bubbles in the new batch of water and BS. after that rinse it well in warm water, dry and treat as normal.

I could used to get that "sodium bicarbonate" from work as we would have too many skids of it to count & all in 100lb bags but it is no more.
You might check with possible friends in the chemical industry or manufacturing as it is a common ingredient for anything from latex to thermo-plastics to get you some of this.

I will strip a hide quickly but have never saved one choosing instead to get them to a buyer a couple times a month. The only negative feedback that I get is on the Black ones...used to be that they were worth $50
But they found that the hair would slip after processing and said that this was because of a cross between Coyote and Domestic and will not take them at all (at least in my parts).
Just thought that this might save you some work although the Black ones are much rarer than the rest.

I just did a quick search on Google, those guys have it for about 55.00 per 100lbs. Depending on how many you need to process, you may be just as well off to go to the dollar store and buy a few boxes.

Thank you guys  :) I went to a fur handling site and they pretty much went as far as to say that spoilage
can occur , but didn't say how to avoid it from happening.I hope this helps other folks as well,as this does me,I spent ALOT of time on that beauty of a hide and to have to toss it really hurt my purpose for taking
that animal. Thanks again !

If you need to get a hold of some sodium bicarb, check with your local feed store.  Sodium Bicarb is routinely used in dairy cow rations (it is used to buffer the rumen pH to enhance animal health, and promote proper milk fat concentrations).  Here in Idaho, many of the dairies that I work with buy Bicarb by the truck load (30 tons at a time).  If you want to come out here, I am sure I can hook you up with some ;D ;D ;D
If God did not intend for us to eat animals, why did he make them out of meat???
