I have ordered a New Ruger MKII with the 5.5" Bull Barrel/AS
I have over the years owned a couple MKII's and had various experiences with them. Has anyone bought one lately? If so, how is the quality these days?
Another concern is reliability. In the past on one I owned it was very accurate, but reliability was just something it wasn't, was a jam-o-matic.
Is this still a common problem with the MKII's?
And lastly, what about the accuracy department? What has produced consistent results on paper(what ammo type/brand performed well in your MKII)?
Just had to ask.. I'm really looking forward to shooting the MKII again, and it will see lots of service. I intend to shoot it more than my other guns because of cost.

My son and I both own the bull barrel MK2. They are often stiff when new so we take a brick of 22s and shoot the dickens out of them when they are new. I had some jams in mine when it was new but now it never happens unless the $9.00 for 500 rounds stuff has bum priming compound in some of the cartridges. They are superb guns.

I had planned on polishing the internals when I get it. I do that to all my new ones. Usually a little Flitz or Iosso and my Dremel Tool with a felt polishing wheel. I've never hurt any of my guns by doing this, and it helps a lot of things like the trigger, feeding/extraction,etc. I also plan on using JB Bore Cleaner and JB Bore Brite on the barrel before shooting it.

As far as the jamming,I'd experiment with diferent ammos.My slabside shoots Fed Gold Match the most accurately,but after polishing still jams often.win Power points are next best and I'v never had one jam.

I own two 22/45 Rugers that I use for falling plates. One is the slab side and the other is the 5"(?) bull barrel. I also own a MKl. Mine all feed perfectly with the ammo I feed them. The only problem I have is an occasional misfire with cheap ammo. I use CCI Mini Mags for matches. I have yet to have a misfire with it.

best advice i can give on a 22/45 is to add a slip on rubber grip sleeve by hogue. it feels great in my hand anyway. mine doesn't jam. shoots several ammos great. cci mini mag hp's, rem target, win T22 target, wolf match target, and match extra

I just picked up my Mark II this morning, and I have to say "wow".. This thing looks really nice. Much better looking than the ones I have previously owned. Fit and finish is superb from what I can tell so far. Very very nice.
The action is smooth as can be out of the box. It's loaded down with greasy gunk however, and that MUST GO. What I will do is degrease it, polish any areas that look or feel rough, then treat it with Militec-1. I DO plan on polishing the feed ramp a little. But very slightly, like in all the guns I own. I sure hope this MKII shoots as well as it looks. If it does, I will be a very happy man.

Bet it shoots just as good as it looks. I shoot NRA rimfire falling plate matches, the weapon of choice is the MKll. These guys are mostly Master Class shooters and will not tolerate inaccurate or unreliable firearms.

I took that MKII down.. Man what a tight fitted gun! Was total He** getting it back together again. But that is a good thing in my book.
I went a little overboard on my bore prep I think. Been reading about the benchrest folks and how they "season" bores. So, I took the below steps:
1)MPro7 bore cleaner on patch..
2)Dry Patch(all kinds of crud rolled out)
3)Kroil on patch.
4)dry patch(more crud gunk)
5)JB Bore cleaning compound (gobs of junk came out)
6)dry patch
7)Kroil
8)dry patch
9)JB Bore Brite Final Polish
10)Dry patch
11)Kroil (now clean with no gunk)
12)dry patch (came out clean)
I will be honest.. This part sucked! But the bore WAS rough when I stared. After doing the above, the bore is now very very slick. No more rough spots can be felt in the bore like before. Looking down bore it is very clean and noticeably shiny. At the least, maybe this will make it foul less. I'm not expecting it to do 1/2" groups at 25 yds. At any rate, I enjoyed this "bonding" time tonight with my new toy...err.. I mean pistol. Except the steps above. No fun in that at all.

Soooo, how does it shoot? Are you happy with it...hope so? Try some wolfe match if you can find it...that's what I use. When benched, my pistol will put them in the same hole at 60ft.

Yes, I am happy with it. At first, the Federal HP worked the best. But after more time with it, and extended shooting, I found a better performing load. Some old Russian ammo with "Junior" on the box. Only bad thing is that is has a very large amount of lube on the bullets. This presented no problems however. I did not do any shooting past 25 ydss with it, and the target was a 2" dot. Put them all inside the dot. I can't ask for more than that, because even at that range it looks like a Blip on the iron sights. The stock sights DO suck I think. They will be replaced.

Yup...I ditched the iron sights on my MKII for a Ultradot and installed a Volquartsen trigger assembly. I'm very happy with the set-up now...it's a lot more fun to shoot too.

I have a new (month old) Ruger, and have already shot several bricks of various makes of ammo thru it. I generally use the cheapest ammo I can find, and have yet to have a misfire. A friend of mine used to ahve one, and his was very finicky about the type of ammo, but mine eats it all up. I'm not sure if Ruger is doing something different, if my friend was unlucky, or if I just got lucky. But I love mine.

If you have misfires it will be the ammo not the gun. The Mk ll is as sound as they come.

Congrats on the great gun. I have the same one myself and I reallly like it. It does jam occasionally but hasn't for a while so maybe it just takes time to break it in. I did the same as far as polishing to try to rememdy the jamming to no avail but now it seems to be better. Had better luck with round nose bullets too (not the truncated cone bullets). Didn't like Stingers very much either. I think they have longer brass than standard but whatever reason my MKII didn't like them too much. It shoots great though. Put 5 rounds inside a dime at 25 yards when I first got it.

What sites can people recommend? The stock ones just aren't that good and need replaced.

I just bought my Ruger 22/45 last week and the pistol looks great! Shoots very good too! I bought a brick of Federals at KMart for 9 bucks and the next day there was a sale at Dicks on Remington hollow points for 8 bucks, got a brick of those too. Went out on Sunday, fired close to 800 rounds thru it and NO jams! None! Zero!
The sights topside are not all that great and I will be replacing them with Williams FireSights from Midway for under $40.

Howdy.
I have a MkII that I have shot thousands of rounds through without ever having a problem with reliability. One thing I did though that made this gun fit to my hand like a glove, was to put on a Hogue rubber molded grip with finger grooves and thumb rest. About $21 from the Hogue website, basically a rubber version of the wood grips that I believe come standard on the slabside target model.

I put a millet white outlined rear sight on my 5.5 bull barrel target cost, about fifty bucks. I found it only to be slightly better that the factory sights. want to put a red ramp front sight on too but couldn't find one. So I took a blaze orange peice off of a razor and glued in on with epoxy putty. Its getting easier to see the sights on it now. My wife has the standard sights and I feel they give a better sight picture than the target model does. Less of a gap on each side to line her sights up. I feel the that the rear notch should have a smaller opening to compensate for the larger gap on each side with the target model. But i'm getting use to it and am have lots of fun with it. I to have installed the full voquartsen kit and added the wooden laminate grips with thump rest. I am almost 50 and I can't shoot with iron sights very well as my eyes do not focuse as good as they use to. I may have to scope it to get a better sight picture.

just bought a mk2 government target model. havent got to bring it home yet. what kind of accuracy should gun be capable of? what is a good scope mount if i decide to scope. notice i said accuracy of gun not me i know it is better than i am

Congratulations!!!

If yours is a good as mine, it will put them all in the same hole at 25 yards, if you can hold the gun still enough (benched). I have an Ultra-Dot scope mounted on mine using the mount and rings Ruger provides...they are very solid and are doing the job.

My Govt. Model prefers lower-velocity ammo match ammo (like Wolfe or Federal). I can hold the pistol out with an outstreched arm, and it doesn't take long to find out out that I AM the biggest variable in the equation. :lol: I keep telling myself to "aim small...".

thanks i believe this will be bad medicine for squirrels. next question scope or red dot . or iron sight (dot would be millet sp1 unless i can find a smaller dot) or is gun more accurate than dot

I have a 22/45 with the 5.5" bull barrel, with a B-square full length mount and a "Target Sports" Red Dot. It shoots terrific, even with the cheapo red dot.

I have had a jam here and there with my MKII but notice very few if any since I put the Volquartsen kit in it. I believe the reason for most jams is the heavy hammer spring. Some ammo just doesn't have the power to push it back and cock the hammer. VQ gives you a lighter replacement spring. Its hell to get in but does a good job once its installed.
