Scope mount problems....marlin mod 782 .22 mag
« on: December 21, 2008, 03:13:40 AM »
I have a Marlin .22 magnum on which I am have some pboblems keeping the scope in place......I loaned it out to my uncle and when I got it back, the mounts had moved forward tothe point of the front mount only halfway into the groove in the reciever. He didn't notice this when he wa using it. I am assuming that the mounts are slipping, as I had the same problem when I got it back from another friend I had loaned it to.....I am the one who installed the mounts, and I know they were put on tight. Has anyone else had this problem? I think that as the rifle is fired, the mounts move a little each time with the recoil...What kind of mounts do you use on yours? I have a BSA Huntsman 3x9x40 scope on it, so they need to be medium height rings for the bolt to work......any suggestions?            Mike Bare

You have a few options that will work.
First I would try to take the rings off the receiver and clean the grooves and rings with paint thinner or alcohol. Let dry and get some red permanent loctite. Apply on rings and remount. If you ever need to remove the rings just heat at contact point and clean off loctite with paint thinner. Just in case I would loctite the mounting screws as well. If you ever have to remove just heat allen wrench near screw and it will come back out easily.
The second option is the same process. Just buy a mount similar to this.

Loctite to dovetail, and use weaver rings for the scope. This option is just for people who are very rough with their rifles.. The 22 mag recoil will not defeat the first option. The second option would take a hammer to get it to come off.
The 782 has very soft metal in the receiver. It doesn't do any good to drill and tap a weaver mount unless you coat the whole bottom of the mount with loctite. That is the third option.
