looking to get a scope
« on: December 11, 2008, 12:33:04 PM »
i have just been given a .357 taurus 669 from my dad. he has one and i have always loved it and he came across one and bought for me. it needs to reblued but other than that is in good shape. my question is if i wanna shoot deer at or less than 50 yds would a red dot scope be enough? it also drilled and tapped on the barrel and i was wondering if that could be dangerous?

I own a Ruger GP100 with 6" barrel and plan on putting a reddot scope on it. I just need to purchase a scope base for the gun and I was going to use the B-Square base. The reddot I plan on getting will be made by Millett. I just don't really want to spend around $50.00 on a scope base, so the scope thing is on hold right now. If I do get it set up, this will only be a close range gun for deer maybe out to 50 yards.....

2x leupold. In my opinion they could discontinue everything else and a handgunner would be left wanting.

Yes, a Red Dot will be adequate to 50 yds., if the shooter is. No, if the drilling and tapping was done properly, it will not be dangerous on the barrel.

The complaints on the cheaper ones (<$50) range from "wont hold zero" to "cant see the dot in full daylight"

The complaints on my Bushnell Trophy ($100) were that the poa changes with selecting a diff recticle (I have not tryed this yet) but the dot is clear and bright at a low rheostat or brightness setting even in the summer sun. My Bushnell Trophy has only had to survive a couple hundred shots on top the .44 mag and is holding it's zero well.

Next in line IMO would be the $135 Ultra dot or perhaps $185 for the Ultra dot four dot (No Complaints that I could find with again, the ability to hold zero & dot brightness being keypoints)
Other complaints in general are that the dot is too bright in the dawn & pre-dusk conditions...my bushy has the ability to change the recticle from Red to Green but I believe that the Red only would work well in either
The bushy or the Ultra on the low setting.

bushnell holo site on my raging bull 44mag and no problem with holding a zero.  100 yrs and in the paper plate every time. It took alot of shooting to get to placing them in the plate but never had that much fun.

IMHE the Ultra Dot 30 works well, I think I have 3. I also have other red dots, several of the less expensive models of various manufacture which I have removed and sitting on a shelf. I have a couple of Aimpoints that I have had for several years that perform well.

I use them on .22, .357 and .45AR.

Ditto on it being great fun to see those holes in the paper @ 100yds +
I would really like to go with a Holo in 09'...perhaps a Burris fast fire. What I like about these types is the ability to see around and through them so well.
