NCSTAR SCOPE MOUNTS - MY EXPERIANCE
« on: December 06, 2008, 04:01:18 PM »
I got Encore fever and bought several barrels. With the added cost of reloading dies, bullets, cases and powder, I had to buy budget scopes. I like the 2-7 NCSTAR and the Illuminated version too. On the light recoil calibers such as 223 and 22-250, they work fine (so far). However, the free scope mounts that come with them are another matter. It has been my experience that they shoot loose. The large tension knobs that lock to the base mount (I bought weavers) tend to need re tighten several times a day when playing at the range. The cap screws are not fine enough threads and they come loose too. Every 10 to 20 rounds, I found at least one part that could be re tightened. Do not waste your time and ammo with these free mounts. Now that I am all sighted in, I have to buy new mounts and start all over. What a waste of time and money. I hope I can help others not to make the same mistake.
Happy shooting.

I've found that any handcannon type caliber in an Encore or Contender requires great (not just good) mounts.  I'd also like to hear how the 2x7 holds up under the recoil of a 44 mag or harder recoiling barrel.  I'd also appreciate any comments.

My old .35 Rem barrel pounded an NcStar scope literally to pieces (both lenses fell out) after about 20 factory rounds, I wouldnt put one on anything bigger than .22 LR if you want them to last any amount of time. The one I had came on the barrel when I got it and I seriously doubted it would hold up, boy was I right.

I did a search on here for information on the NCSTAR scopes before I bought one. I got a lot of information and now I have one on my 44 Super Blackhawk revolver, a 2x (so far so good)  one on my 308 rifle. a 6x18, one on my 22 rifle,a 4x mildot,  one on my Encore 15' 223 , a 2-7 Illuminated and one on my Encore 15'' 22-250, a 2-7 Silver color. I put a 2-7 Elite on my 308 barrel and I don't like the scope very much. On high power settings, it tends to "white out" with the tiniest of movement. That makes it hard to shoot on a bench. Hunting you would use lower power settings and those are OK. So far, I am having great luck with NCSTAR products but I would not recomend putting one on a heavy recoil handgun. I hope this helps.
Happy shooting

P.S My 223 is shooting one hole groups at 50 yards with an NCSTAR scope and a James Henry trigger job (31 o/z. )

I've got about 250 rounds through a 7-08 15" Encore with NCStar set up that I got used.  Only complaint is that the scope rotates a few degrees in the mounts after 4-5 boxes.  I put an index mark on the scope and mount so I can easily adjust if necessary.  Nice clear scope for any money though and I haven't seen a need to change it yet. ;)

I little dab of fingernail polish or purple (222) Loc-tite will keep your screws tightened.  A matte finish address return label like you get in junk mail once in a while works good to keep scopes from rotating within your rings.  (The shiney ones will work, but not as well as the dull finish matte looking ones.)

I have a friend with a couple of NC Star scopes and he likes them.  I have an NC star laser on my 45acp.  Seems to be in same spot, but I don't play with laser much as I mostly shoot in daytime at 25-50 yards where laser doesn't reach.

Keep us posted on how those NC scopes last.....

I finally got the NCSTAR mounts on my 223 Encore pistol to settle in for a bit. My V-Max loads are shooting three shot one hole groups at 50 yards. Not a clover leaf, just one hole!  Now that I built my version of a Bower rest, I will see what happens farther out. busy calling coyotes right now. Need to try my V-Max loads of some local predator's. So I built my self a set of shooting sticks. I will be using my new Cass game caller and see if it works.
