Trip to the Pasayton Wilderness........
« on: May 21, 2003, 07:53:16 AM »
Going for a weekend hike to scout out some areas that look good for a hike in deer hunt. Big Mules love the high country.  Any one else done any hike in deer camps, and any ideas of advice for a first timer.
Thanks in advance.

Britt-
Good luck on your scouting trip, I hope you do well.
I'm no expert on this type of hunting but I've do backpack hunt from time to time.
Think light, ultra light. I keep telling myself this every time I hunt up in those wilderness back pockets. Be aware of temperture drops and have rain protection with you.
I'm always evaluating my gear finding useless stuff I don't really need to be carrying out there. I do sacrifice some comfort to carry other gear, so there is a trade-off of sorts. At least I believe I'm saving weight.
Sometimes I hike in to a spike camp and day hunt out of it. Other times I'll backpack and scout a large circle sleeping a different place every night. I try to be able to move to another location in case one don't pan out (back-up plan) as hoped.
I don't think I'll ever get it right but I am improving. My next purchase will be a floorless single pole shelter, I've had good luck with one before the zipper blew.

Britt-
Let us know how everything goes and your thoughts on the equipment used/using. I for one am always open for ideas and observations.
  Good luck
 Clayton

P.S.  Some of the biggest deer I've ever seen were in those out of the way back pockets!

Just got back and boy am I excited. Saw a lot of muleys A couple 5x5 and 6x6s tuff to tell because they still have velvet on their racks. Big full bodied deer though. Even saw some Grizzly tracks.  Need to get some info on the best way to pack out game from a trip like this. Will be traveling 4 or so miles on semi flat ground. Any help would be good.

Hey Britt
Glad to hear everything went well.
To pack out, I got a old Coleman Peak I frame. I made an adjustable shelf to ride in the slots on the frame so I can carry the weight high or low depending on the balance I need. I use bungees to lash the weight in place.
Also, a outfitter with horses could come in handy if it's going to be too tough to haul out.
I've been very lucky myself in that I had good access to both game and help in most cases. I still dread the day I do nail something really big way back there.

 Good luck, Clay

Clay thanks again. One last question we will have 4 or 5 guys in camp what are the options for keeping game cold for deer shot early. Do I need to pack it out right away or is their some other options.  If their is other options I couldnt come up with them. Thanks
Britt

I don't know for sure Britt. Myself if I were to stay camped there for a while I'd hoist it in a tree so the meat would stay cool. I'd wouldn't quarter till it was time to leave. I'd check the meat every now and then to make sure it was still fresh, maybe sprinkle pepper in the cavity to keep flies down. Might even wrap it with a poncho if the weather looks dark.
You mentioned grizzly. That could be a problem, might be better to pack out as soon as possible if there is a grizzly in the area. I know I sleep better knowing I've done everything possible to eliminate bear nuisance or danger. I just don't like them around camp looking for food. All we have out here are black bear, I'd be somewhat concerned if fresh sign was around though.

Hi guys.
sounds like you hunt like I do.
Clay,I dont want to tell you what to do with your game after you drop one.Dont cover one with a plastic poncho or any plastic, the meat will sour fast that way.
When I make a kill and the temp could get warm,I skin it then cover the exposed meat with blood,if you dont have a cotton game bag,and let it harden. The blood helps preserve the meat and it also will keep it clean.
I most generally hunt the wilderness so no gas powered vehicals.I make arangements with a fellow that has packhorses and let him carry out the Elk.Most generally I'm high enough were I can reach him with a cell phone,or I walk out 5-6 miles to my truck and get him.
Lp.
