Remington 597
« on: January 12, 2009, 05:45:23 AM »
I Bought a used 597 with 3 extra mags, scope rings, and sling for $100. Went out to sight it in yesterday and discovered just how good a deal it was. I started at 25 yards and got it hitting dead on. Move out to 50 yards and knock out a 1/2" 3 shot group......say to self "interesting". Move out to 100 yards and shoot a 1" 3 shot group. This was with CCI mini mag ammo, chronied at 1248 fps. I also messed with some Aquila super max ammo, this stuff chronied at 1676 fps!! I ran out of time to really work with it, but I twice put two shots in an inch and one shot 2" away. Of interest, this ammo was dead on at 100 being 1" high at 50. The mini mags were on at 50 and 6" low at 100.

Sounds like a great deal on a great gun. Good buy!

If you're planning on shooting much of that Aquila super max, see if you can grab a few spare bolt buffers to keep handy... It won't be long before you need one.

the next best thing to do for this rifle is install an aftermarket trigger hammer if it has not already been done. i and a friend each did this to ours and dropped the trigger pull in half. only time i ever shot for a group was off the hood at 48 steps and the 4 shells i had in the gun could be covered with a dime. this is in 17hmr.

The guy I bought it from clamied to have upgraded the hammer. I don't know how to tell, but it does have a sweet trigger pull.

45/70fan -

CCI Mini-mags and CCI SGBs shoot great in mine. However a lot of other ammo from Remington, Winchester, PMC, RWS, Federal, etc. etc. prints the worst groups I've ever seen in a rimfire rifle.  I'm talking 3" groups at 25 yards from a rest with decent scopes. Until I found success with CCI ammo, I was convinced this gun was a giant piece of crap (excuse my French). Other 597 owners report this gun is finicky, but once you find the right fodder it more than holds its own.

Volquartsen has a replacement hammer that cuts trigger pull in half. Check out their website for a picture. The cut-out holes are different from stock hammers.

I've got one as well and it was without a doubt worth $140 I paid for it ! I love it, I think mine has been moded too the trigger is light & crisp, it too shoots the same kind of groups you report on yours.
I use the CCI Mini- Mags.I think we both got lucky as others seem to hate it. I had the 597 Magnum
but sold it ,and been kickin myself in the butt ever since. That too was a sweet gun.If you get a chance
try gettin ahold of one of them, you'll be tickled that you did !
