My Dad did from December 1944 thru March of 1945. 63rd Infantry division, 254 Regiment. Battle of The Bulge, The Colmar Pocket, The battle of Jebsheim, Spearhead for the 63rd Infantry at the Siegfried Line.

   Thank your Pop for his service ... I knew that alot of unlikely companies made a number of Arms for ours boys in Europe and the South pacific .. But didnt know that H&R had , Guess i wasnt too suprised .. Heck Singer sewing machines made a M1 Carbine ;)

   My Garand was made by International Harvester .. Shane your right , They sure are handy  .. Even 60+ years after their start

 My dad passed away in 1973 and carried an M1 all through basic but he would disagree with Gen. Patton who said it was the greatest battle implement ever devised. My pop liked the old o3A3 he carried while in the WV National Guard much better.

 It's interesting to see all the companies that turned their peacetime production into wartime production. Union Switch and Signal, U.S. Postal Meter, and many more.
  When I was a kid a factories usefulness was determined not only by what it made and how many people it employed but also by how fast the turn around time was to have it turn out war material. The was the way people thought back then.

I'm NO expert.........but;  Its my understanding from what I have read about the H&R Company, that ALL of the M-1's made by H&R came in too late for WW II but were "in service" for the Korean conflict.  Doesn't diminish a thing and given what my father told me about WW II and Korea (he was in both up to his arm pits) that the conditions in Korea were horrific in the winter.....summer, fall and spring weren't much better......  That the H&R saw "service" and performed so well, was, and is, a testament to the quality of the product produced and of course to the design of this wonderful rifle.

My Dad carried a Garand in the Philippines during WWII, he loved in so much he bought one for himself first chance he got which was in the early '60s as I recollect, but he didn't keep it too long, his memory of how heavy it was when he was 19yrs old apparently didn't leave a lasting impression on him, or it gained it weight over the years, he sold it after carrying it one season after killing the biggest deer he'd ever seen or shot!!  ;D

I believe that's correct.  The H&R's were a post WWII contract.  One of my Garands is an H&R that was made in 1953.  Absolutely wonderful workmanship!   ;D

My weapon was the Garand and My dad's was the 03A3.  I was in the Navy and the Marines had all the M-16s in Nam.  I too have always preferred the 03 Springfield.  I have shot them both well, perhaps it's just nostalgia.  I don't own either today, but perhaps one day.  It's not easy to find an 03 that hasn't been chopped up.

     Alot of the old war dogs got chopped before thier collectors value shot up , I am a bit of a gun hound and see them (the orignal condition 03's) here in my area from time to time ... So if i cross pathes with one ill be sure to shoot a message your way .. In fact thinking about it i might know where one is right now, Think its been in that pawn shop for a while now..I'll let you know .

  The 30-40 krags got chopped up alot too .. But hell isnt that the way of the world?
 How many of you all had a Chevy Apache step side ,A 60's chevelle or Nova? How many chopped bucket T's have you all helped buddy out with cutting or maybe the welding ?
 Thankfully enough the garand saw their time as respected and collected come before they all got thrown into a furnace of chopped into "What The Hell was that person thinking" condition ..
  So we all can be glad for the luck and favor of the garand ... God knows i waited long enough to finally have my own .
  And mine like the H&R was used in Korea .. International Harvester started making them at the end times of WW2..
