24 pounder Finished
« on: November 29, 2008, 07:29:39 AM »
Thanksgiving evening after all 39 children grandchildren and their spouses left for their homes I went out into the shop and spent the next 4 hours rough turning a new 416 stainless barrel, this morning after the 2 photos were taken I started boring the barrel, this is going to be fun as the barrel is 19" long and my lathe is 36 between centers.  I will use a 5C collet to hold the drill on the carrage when I get beyond the capacity of the tail stock. Now have another hour in the project and have drilled 6".

Looking great so far. Please more pics. The drill set up sounds like a good idea.

Paul, that's one fine looking naval gun.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Tropico, the bore is 1" the bbl is 19 1/2" long 3.437" at its largest dia. Barrel weights 30# and is made from 416 stainless.  The carriage is red oak. The wheels are 3.437 dia 1" wide.  I still have the 4 wedges for the caps to make. Tomorrow I will powder coat the wheels and other metal parts. I plan on powder coating the barrel at a later time.

I think it is Eastwood's that sells "bronze" powdercoat. If I remember right they have a few "patinas" too. Think outdoor light fixtures, for an idea of what they look like. I have thought of buying some to try. MIKE

Here it is complete, still need to make the tools and some day powdercoat the bbl. It weighs in at  41# with the carriage.  Due to alot of snow on the ground and more comming It will be a while till I shoot it. Will try and take a video of the first shot. also a shot of my stable of noise makers
