300 Whisper & 30/223 Loads
« on: August 06, 2003, 04:36:15 AM »

Hello:

Does anyone have favorite 300 Whisper loads to share ?? I also need any/all info on the 30/223 for the Contender. In the 300 Whisper, mostly I will be shooting bullets up to 150 grains, maybe a 170 grain one every now and then. I also shoot cast bullets in this one.

Info/data is very scarce in the 30/223. In doing research on the internet, I have found it called the 30 Apache. I am having a barrel made for this one, as it has more power than the 300 Whisper, using the 223 case necked to 30 caliber, versus the 221 FireBall case necked to 30 caliber.

Any help/info will be greatly appreciated. Matter of fact, does any member on here have any dies, barrels, etc. ?? Thanks in advance.

check out www.quarterbore.com and www.accuratepowder.com..and do a search on the 300 Whisper..I usually always find something new there.  Quarterbore lists J.D.Jones'SSK loads.  I have found the 125 Grain BT to be the most accurate from my T/C Custom Shop barrel, but have loaded weights from 90 grain Xtp's to 165 grain BT's.  The single shot pistol bullets would give you the best expansion.

I forgot to mention that the Sierra 50th Anniversary Edition Handgun Reloading Manual has several pages devoted to the 300 Whisper..

:-)  Hello and thanks for the reply. Could you tell me anymore about the rimmed version you have out ?? Is it the 357 Maximum necked to 30 caliber ?? I also have that one made up, looking at it on my desk here. Any way, I think I'm going ahead with my 30/223 since I have lots of brass and experience with wildcatting 223 military cases.

I know the 357 Maximum necked to 308 caliber really looks good. Personally, I've never had any problems with rimless rounds in my TC's. I have a cousin down the road, and he almost never has anything in the Contenders but rimmed rounds. Oh, well, I guess it's all what you like and get used to.

Thanks, would enjoy more info if you could/would on this most fascinating caliber. I do enjoy the little 300 Whisper, too.
