Speer vs Hornady roundballs
« on: May 17, 2009, 03:54:47 AM »
54 caliber Speer roundballs cost $2 more per hundred than the same size in Hornady.  Has anyone noticed a difference in the performance of Speer vs Hornady roundballs?

Yes, Speer have more consistant weight per ball in each box, and are more consistant from box to box. Speer are actually round, if you roll one across a flat surface. Hornady wobble.
If you look at Semisanes weighing ball thread and look at his composite target towards the lower part of the thread, you'll see two or three shot's that are way out if the group, those are the "flyers" .
There is the fact of Oburation(spl?), meaning the soft lead ball changes shape when under the pressures of being fired down the bore, it actually leaves the bore not being round anymore. But I believe that if you start with a more perfect sphere the oburatation will result in a more consistant or evenly shaped projectile being shot.
Yes I'm a paper puncher, but I'm also I'm a hunter. For me, having the confidence gained by proficiant accuracy target shooting, means that while hunting, I can concentrate on the hunt and not worry in the least about where my gun's going to shoot. After all, squeezing the trigger is actually the end of the hunt  ;).
Unfortunatly my local source of Speer has just dried up. so I guess I'll hafta pull out all the stuff I've gatherd and start casting, I know there is a learning curved to become skilled at casting but I'm a quick study. I've got 114# of lead so I guess it's time to use it. I'll use Hornady only as a last option, cause I know from experiance that there WILL BE some shot's that will go way off the mark  :P :(
