30-30 Rifling - Rate of Twist
« on: August 30, 2003, 01:11:20 PM »
I need to find out when T/C changed the 30-30 rate of twist from 1 in 14 to 1 in 10.  I'm going to buy a used 10" 30-30 Contender barrel, and I want to make sure that I get the 1 in 10 rate.  I'm only interested in the later barrels that have the two screw front sight installation as opposed to the permanent front sight.  So if the screw-on front sights came in after the 1 in 10 twist, then I'm good to go.  So about what year did the twist rate change to 1 in 10, and about what year did the screw-on front sights begin?

Thanks for the help,       J. R.

I am not sure about the Sight Configuration or the Date of the change.

However one way to tell is the number of lands and grooves in the barrel. To my knowledge all of the barrels with the 1 in 14" twist were 6 land and groove barrels, and the later barrels with the 1 in 10" twist were 8 land and groove barrels.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I would check the barrel and see what the twist is.hold the barrel up to the light and follow one of the rifiling to the end of the barrel , if the rifiling starts and stops in the same place  its a one turn in ten. if that don't work a good cleaning rod and a stiff brush will work. start brush and rod into barrel ,mark rod at barrel, put and index mark on rod about 6 inchs from muzzle, push in rod until index mark makes one half turn, mark the rod. remove it from the barrel and measure between the marks, double the measurement and you have the length for one turn in the barrel. hope I didn't confuse you. good luck
