I had to go to Ft. Lewis, Washington in 2001 for some training. Everything was new to this southern boy, as it was my first time ever in Washington state. Here is the Reader's Digest version:
We were on patrol one night (My first night in the field at Ft. Lewis). The moon was full, and when I took off my ANPVS-4s (NVGs), I would see the green splotches glowing on the ground. Being from the south, the only thing that glows at night are spook lights, so I was in Awe. Turns out that this stuff was a fungus that is bioluminescent. Well, after my roaming guard shift was up, I went back to sleep in my hasty position. The ants at Ft. Lewis will pack you up and take you home if you don't watch it, so needless to say, I didn't sleep very well. I sat there listening to the night sounds at 0346 hrs, and all of the sudden, this rush of wind came over us and it actually felt like the wind had some kind of substance to it (almost like the wind was hairy and brushed against my buddy and me). While this wind was "passing by" (it didn't last more than a half of a second), I heard a woman's whisper. I didn't really understand what she or it said, but I know that my hair was standing on end and I felt down to the marrow of my bones that something was not right and we were in danger.
That very instant when I felt the flight or fight syndrome come over me, an artillery simulator blew up nearby and OPFOR started attacking (for those of you not familiar in Army speak, an Artillery simulator is an extremely loud pyro piece that starts out with a whistle...and OPFOR is Opposing Forces (the pretend bad guys)). I never found out what the hell it was that I heard, and I probably don't want to know. I don know that I did not feel right after hearing that, and that is scared the sin outta me.
Well that is one of my Strange Outdoor stories, hope you enjoy.
