CONTENDER BARREL FIT?
« on: August 18, 2003, 04:52:22 AM »
Hello. I have a conteder that I have had for about 15 years it came with the 45/410 barrel and always worked fine. I recently bought a second hand 357 mag barrel for it and it just does not fit good. It is hard to close and almost impossible to open after fired. I was told by a friend that some of the newer contender barrels will not work with the older guns "I'm not sure when the gun was built I bought it used" but I have never read anything about this. Is this true?

Any of the barrels (except some of the newest being make for the G2) should fit any of the frames. Lots of possible reasons, but two biggies.
If you're shooting reloads, try it with factory ammo. Your overall length could be too long causing your "hard to close" problem. Second it could be a bolt height problem (bolts fit in the lug and are spring loaded. You can fix it yourself or TC will fix it for you.) There've been some good explanations on this forum that I won't try to duplicate ('cause they did a better job than I could ever do). Use the search function to find them.

I reciently ran into this exact situation with a newly purchased low serial # contender ( in that same caliber BTW).  Mine fit tight but had to have the hinge pin driven out  each time the trigger was pulled. NO way it would open and or cock otherwise. ( Even on an empty chamber)  Seems. most newer ( ie mid 70's and newer) barrels have a lug shape and locking device that differes slightly over the early production guns.  On the bright side, T/C said that this is common and that for $55 they would update the gun to the latest trigger, safety and fitment specs along with fitting any barrel I included.  Mine is on it's way.

Bottom line. Contact T/C.
