MN regulations

Im not sure if their is alot of posters on here from MN and I dont have a reg. book and would like to ask a couple questions about pistol regs. A shoulder holster/ hip holster is not considered a case correct? When cased and and being transported the firearm has to be unloaded correct? When in a holster and not in a vehicle the pistol can be loaded when hunting, plinking, or on pubic land without any special restrictions correct?

I think i have answered my questions pretty much by common sense and from goose and deer hunting but im not sure if their is any different regs for pistols.

Check the MN DNR website and google for state firearms regs.  I DO NOT KNOW ALL THE REGS MYSELF, but if not during a hunting season using a legal caliber there are limitations for carry on public land.  IF my recollection is correct only a .22 rimfire (any .22 so long as rimfire) can be open carried on public land outside a legal hunting season.  I could be wrong on that.  Now coyotes are open all year round so carry a rabbit call with you and your open sidearm and you might be able to argue that your coyote hunting.  General target shooting is not allowed in most WMA and could be restricted on other public lands, again check.   Check the regs carefully, be fully informed.  Your question about a holster not being a case is correct.  Transported cased and unloaded, correct.

Get a Mn. carry permit and do as you like pretty much anywhere. You do not have to conceal in Mn. though it is a good idea most of the time. Transport laws are pretty much waved when you have the permit as well. I'm not going to attempt to instruct on law here but , a carry permit is simple enough to obtain and the class is a wealth of info.

I don't know if its this way with all WMA's, but some are closed to preditor and crow hunting.  moxgrove, a member here, is a MN handgun hunter.  Maybe Jim will see this post and weigh in on your questions.

I always unload and case my Buckmark as soon as I step out of the field and transport it that way.  Otherwise, its holstered and loaded when I'm in the field. 

I was unable to find even a legal pistol caliber chart in the 2008 hunting regs.  They used to post that, but they made a lot of changes to the regs in '08 and that section was no longer in there.  I haven't been on the site to see if there are any new sections or regs posted there since the start of the new year.
