Guess I'll find out how Ruger's customer service is.....

Had to send in my Blackhawk, ejector rod housing came off the barrel.   :(

Have any of you sent a pistol through UPS lately?  $76 to ship it.... ridiculous!

It seems to me a local gunsmith could fix it for less.
I have had Ruger work on 3 guns for me, I have been very pleased with the work they did. On one gun, a No.1 rifle, they took their sweet time doing the repair. When I called them after 4 months it seemed they forgot about it and I received it 2 weeks after phoning. Again, the work was very good, just slow

Was about to say---pretty sure a local guy could tap a new screw for you for less than $76.

It's not a question of tapping a new screw, there's a little button that is silver soldiered into a notch on the barrel that accepts a screw.  The local gun smith wanted an outrageous sum to do this work, saying he would need to refinish.

Didn't think UPS would still ship handguns!
I just sent my BISLEY 45 colt off to JOHN GALLAGER to do a full custom with a 5.5" octagon barrel.
When I went to ship it they told me it HAD to go FED-EX ESPRESS OVERNIGHT at $69.42.

Anyway back to your post.
I think you will find RUGER service to be just fine.
I have had a couple sent back and not only was the repair done  but severial things that I didn't even request were performed as well at no charge.

Yep, take it to FedEx.  It has to go overnight.  The last 2 I shipped were about $40.00. You'll need to remove the cylinder.  It can be in the box with the gun.  You must tell them it's a gun.    Forget UPS!  I couldn't even get them to ship a flintlock rifle.  They even called Atlanta but said since I wasn't an FFL dealer they wouldn't ship it for me.  I ship all longguns through USPS.  USPS won't do handguns.

The UPS thing must have to do with local ordinances or something.  I've read of people in other cities having problems too.  I ship EVERYTHING through UPS, I always list the item in the description box for insurance coverage, and I'd never had a single problem.  Several of the FFL dealers I go through won't accept a box from Fed-Ex.  They tell me to have it shipped UPS or USPS for the fewest problems.  I've never had a problem with USPS either.

I couldn't ship it from out local UPS store, they made me drive 20 miles to get to their "hub" to ship it.  If I hadn't driven the 20 miles, I probably would have walked out.

Oh, that's why.  Yep, none of the stores are permitted to handle any firearms or gun PARTS.  Kind of dumb though.  The nearest store to me around 20 miles away, and the nearest hub is 2 miles down the road from the store.

I couldn't begin to list the issues I've had with FedEX though.  Lost items, delivered to the wrong address, packages left out in the pouring rain, etc.  And these were all items that were supposed to have an adult's signature to confirm delivery too.  And not one of them did.

UPS will destroy an anvil.  I only use USPS when I can.  Twice as fast and never broken.

I have had things lost and broken from all three.
I can tell you that UPS policy is if it is marked fragile or glass all that means is that you can't throw it over hand! But you can throw it under hand!!!
I did ship a HANDY barrel UPS not long ago and in the description box I put METAL PIPE!
After all that is what it is.

You should call Ruger before you pay that kind of money to ship a gun to them. The odds are very good that they will pay the shipping both ways, and do anything reasonable to make you happy with their product.

Shoulda, coulda, woulda.  I got a slip in the mail acknowledging that they received it on 9/15.  Before I sent it in, I was told 4-6 weeks, we'll see if that holds true.

I called Ruger yesterday and they said my gun should leave the factory today or early next week.  Not too bad turnaround time.  Hope I get it back in good shape.

Happy to hear that. Sounds like you're back in business. As far as I know, most people get real quality from the Ruger service department. I have a Blackhawk in .41 Mag and also a .357 Anniversary Flattop. Wouldn't part with either one of them.

I'm excited to shoot it.  It's a very accurate gun and really is a pleasure to shoot.

the barrel is drilled and tapped to accept the ejector rod housing shroud retaining screw.  you can back that screw out and apply loctite or periodically tighten the screw.  heavy recoil will cause it to back out over time, and the same heavy recoil will snap the screw flush with the barrel once it is just a little loose, sending the shroud, rod, and spring flying in all directions.  this has happened to me twice.  the handloads i shoot are kind of hot, and even though this supposedly voids the warranty, ruger still honors it.  i called them for some extra screws and they sent them to me free of charge.  always good to have extra parts like that handy, just in case.
