Rifle or Pistol Primers for the Jet?
« on: December 24, 2008, 03:09:28 PM »
Bought a S&W model 53 recently and want to reload for it. I found some load data in old Sierra and Speer manuals and also in some on-line sites, and have four or five powders on hand that I can try. What I'm not finding is any meaningful discussions about primers.

Wouldn't rifle primers be best? Some sources say pistol primers and some say rifle primers. The jet looks more like a rifle case than a pistol case to me.  It seems like the thicker cup of a rifle primer would help prevent the primer cups from flowing back around the firing pin under these pressures.

I have searched this forum and found good information, but not a lot said about primers for the Jet.

Thanks.

I have found some pistols won't detonate rifle primers consistently so I use pistol primers in pistols and rifle primers in rifles.  I can't comment on the Jet loading data because I've never reloaded it.   I had to use pistol primers in a 30 Herret in a contender frame as rifle primers would go off about half the time.  The primers seem to interchange fine in a .44 mag rifle or pistol.

What I have found to work the best for me is to use the primer of the parent case , and as the parent case of the Jet is the 357 Mag , a small pistol primer is what I use for mine .

I went through most of my loading manuals with .22 Jet data, all the way back to Speer's 1962 edition, and all recommended pistol primers.  That is except Lyman #46, which listed rifle primers in their data.  Go figure.

Thanks for the responses.  Guess I'll try some of each and see which works best for me.
It just seems like there should be a clear cut choice.
