I’m impressed with Ed’s TC and Contenders in general
« on: December 21, 2008, 09:21:41 AM »
I bought my first Contender, a SS G2 with a 14” 30-30, earlier this year.  It’s fun to shoot, even though I think the trigger is a little heavy.  I’ve taken it hunting a few times, but haven’t had a chance to harvest a deer with it yet.  I do seem to have a problem acquiring targets through pistol scopes.   I just need more practice.

Well, I decided it would be nice to be able to convert it to a rifle.  I called Ed’s Contenders and ordered a TC Custom Shop .35 Remington 24” SS barrel and stock.  I don’t know if I forgot to tell Ed it was for a G2 or not, but I got a regular Contender stock.  I called Ed, and he immediately cross shipped me a G2 Rifle stock.  He is great to deal with, and his prices are reasonable.  I will definitely buy from him again.
I took it to the range today and sighted it in at 100 yards.   Since I don’t reload, I was shooting factory ammo.  With Hornady leverevolution 200 grain rounds, I was able to cloverleaf three rounds.  I was hoping for decent groups out of this gun, but that was better than I expected without handloading.

Now I just need to send the frame in for a trigger job.  There’s no one around here I trust to do it.  I’m thinking of sending it to E. Arthur Brown’s after deer season.

  • You mean this isn't the road to the shooting range

Started shooting TCs about 5 years ago. I met up with Ed at a gun show! I like dealing with him. Have bought 3 or more barrels from him, grips, etc.
I understand that Rick Bellm does a good trigger job, if you can find his site. SSK or JD Jones, also does trigger jobs(he does frames also). Shots gunsmithing does that also.  You can look these guys up on a search.
Welcome to my little world, well, it's expanded into reloading and casting lead bullets for the pistols by now, not so little anymore. A guy can have a really good time with Contenders. If you have trouble steadying the scope at arms length, try placing your left index finger down the left side of the frame and forearm. It takes some of the wobble out by technique. A type of point-and-click thing.

Glad to hear you like it.

On my G2 I smoothed the non-critical areas on the internals and installed a higher power mainspring (just for max. ignition power) and a reduced power trigger spring. My pull is much crisper and about four pounds instead of six.

Stratton custom does trigger jobs and his son owns Match Grade Machine (custom barrels). I've had good experiences with them.

My favorite silhouette barrel (10" .22 WMR) came from Ed's.

I have bought a few barrels from Ed over the years and have been totally satisfied with each and every transaction. If I have a comment about Ed it would be that he is hard to get in touch with at times, but then I realize that he is a really busy man.

I had SHOTS Gunsmithing do a trigger job on a G2 Frame. I thought the work was first rate with minimal turn around time.

I also had a local gunsmith do a trigger job on a different G2 Frame that also turned out very good.

Welcome to the wonder world of T/C's, but be warned they are addicting.
