Need a new rifle
« on: December 23, 2008, 03:24:32 AM »
I just joined a club with a 600 yrd range now I need a new rifle !!. I load for 223, 7-08, 308, 270 , 25-06 do not have a 270 or 25-06 at the moment but tons of  brass. Have loads of stuff for all the above but have 3 308’s already all sporter barrels. I know there are heavy for cal long range bullets for the 22, 7mm & 30 cal but what about the 270 & 25-06

My son will also be shooting it as well I would imagine he is 11 & shoots a model 7 7-08 for his deer rifle.

So should I build a long action stevens in 270 or 25-06 mabe even Ackley them for better case life since I would be adding a barrel or get a savage model 12 low profile varmiter I like the looks of this one!! (cal offered is 223 1:7 or 1:9, 22-250 1:12 or 1:9, 308 also in 204,243 & 300wsm but not really interested in them)

Want a 26in heavy barrell

Never had really shot that far & most likely just a paper puncher so weight is not a problem actually a + more than likely.  This will be a future project & hopefully done by summer

Anyone shoot a 22-250 with 1:9 this sounds interesting
That's my boy, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

I think I would get a Savage 12fv in 308. IMHO that would solve the 600yd problem. I have that rifle in 22-250 and it is devastating on prairie dogs out to 400yds. The 12fv in 308 with 168 hpbt matchkings should do the 600yd job!
IF YOU'RE GONNA GET OLD,YOU BETTER BE TOUGH!! GETTIN' OLD AIN'T FOR SISSIES!!!

Berger makes 25 and 27 caliber VLDs and are supposed to have heavier versions of both in the works.  Neither caliber would be my first choice though.  A 6BR or 6-6.5x47 Lapua would get you to 600 easily, as would a 260 or 6.5x47 Lapua and there are lots of 6 and 6.5mm bullets available.  Or maybe another 7-08 built like you want and to handle some high BC bullets and you've got reloading equipment already.

If you wanted to go with something you already have - make it the 7-08 or 308, preferably the 308. If you wanted to go with some thing different go with the 6 BR - it is available in a Savage action now and is a good long range target round. If you wanted to re barrel go with the 260 - a very good long range cartridge. Stick with the short action rounds - I think you will have better luck with them accuracy wise. There is not much difference, but when you are talking about squeezing as much accuracy out as possible, you need every advantage you can get.

Some thing else to consider - I am building a long range PD rifle in 223. I went with the 223 so that high volume shooting will be as cheap as possible and I already have precision reloading tools for the 223. I went with a 1-14" twist 26" bull barrel for 40 grain bullets to shoot at varying distances. If I were shooting at fixed ranges, like you; I would have went with a 1-8" twist and use VLD bullets.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

if I do decide to compete in an f/tr match the club has it will have to be 223 or 308 something else to add to the mix a 1:7 savage 223 would work & cheaper to shoot over time.
