new handi for christmas
« on: December 26, 2008, 02:30:36 PM »
well santa clause (my wife) bought me a new handi in 223 heavy barrel for christmas. she gave it to me christmas eve and christmas morning i got out and shot it enough to get the temporary scope i mounted sighted in good enough to shoot a 3 shot 1 1/4 group at 100 yards with no barrel break in. this morning was the opening day of our 3 day christmas hunt so i got out this morning and carried the new handi along. about 15 minutes into the hunt (hadnt made it to the stand yet) a doe gave me a quartering to shot and i put it thru the neck and broke the offside shoulder. love the new rifle, its not my first handi but it is the first with the monte carlo stock and i dont care for it one bit. i see either changing to the plain pallet stocks like my other 2 handis or going to synthetic.

Congratulations on the new rifle. My wife used occasionally get me guns for Christmas and birthdays. It got to the point of me telling her exactly what to get and what was the point. So now when I want some thing bad enough, I just go get it. She either gives me cash or a gift card and I use it to buy what I want. As far as the stock design, I think it is what you get used to and get comfortable with. I like high combs on my rifle stocks, but realize not everyone does. I have a straight comb on my T/C carbine stock and wished it had a higher comb to it, but I can get by with it. I know that Tim has stated he prefers the straight (regular) stocks best. On a low kicking rifle, I like to put the comb right under my check bone. On a rifle that has a little more oomph to it, the the lower stock keeps it from pounding my face. I think I am starting to ramble - sorry. Again - Congratulations on the new rifle and it sounds like you got a good shooter. Good Shooting and Good Luck

Congratulations on breaking in the new Handi!   That's the way it's supposed to be done! ;D

I know what you mean about the stock, and it's what you get used to!   I've got one of those Boyd's thumb hole stock, and I'm trying to get used to it.

It's hard to explain, because it fit's me really well when I'm holding it looking through the scope in the shooting position, and I shoot really well using it, but it just feels, and looks a little awkward handling it until I'm aiming it, if that makes any sense?

I prefer the regular low comb stocks also, and have thought about putting the old stock back on, but I'll keep trying it for now and see if it grows on me.

Looks like some sale items or trade fodder may be appearing soon in the classifieds! ;D
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

the comb height doesnt bother me much, its the grip part of the stock. its atleast 1/4 inch or more wider than my other 2 handis and it just doesnt feel right in my hand. if i can find a set of synthetic these are gone.
