6.8 SPC Silver State Armory Brass
« on: December 24, 2008, 01:06:08 PM »
Got ready to load some 6.8 SPC's with CCI 200 primers and they would not seat.
The primer pockets appear to be small rifle and not large rifle. Am I correct to assume
Silve State is using small rifle primers? If this is the case can I use the same data listed for
large primers in these small primer cases? Thanks guys!

I am not familiar with that brass - you should be able to tell if it is a small rifle primer pocket rather easily. There is considerable difference between the two in diameter. A small rifle primer will literally fall out of a large rifle primer pocket. If you are going to use a small rifle primer, may I suggest a Remington 7 1/2 or a CCI BR4 primer? They can handle higher pressures with out piercing than most of the other primers. I use the Remington mostly, because they are cheaper than the CCI primers and I get similar results. As far as data is concerned, I would use the same data, but work your way up in powder charge. It is prudent to do this no matter what reloading componet you change. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

A bit of information found searching the web today.

MidwayUSA has this notice with the Silver State Armory 6.8mm SPC brass:

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT THE PRIMER!
Silver State Armory uses SMALL rifle primers. Remington uses large rifle primers. Please pay extra attention when ordering primers for this brass.

I've read that Hornady is, or will soon be, selling this brass and will also be using the small rifle primer pocket.

Some reports indicate using 6.8 SPC brass with small rifle primers in the Remington 700 Tactical rifle may cause failure to fire due to firing pin design for Large Rifle Primers.

Can't help with load data but LaOtto222 offers good advice.

Good luck.

Bill

When testing these 8 or 9 years ago We encountered a problem. At first load data had them 200 fps slower rem was using small rifle primers. Then rem upped the velocity and they started blowing primers out the back and into the trigger group of the ar. Rem started using a sealer like Russian ammo has then within a month went to large rifle. Since you already have the brass I would follow Otto's advise and maybe put a lacquer sealer in the pocket or clear nail polish just to give it a grip. That way you won't have to drop it down 200 fps. The small pocket can be reamed for large if you wish and you will wash your hands of any problems.

Thanks for the info guys. At first I thought the primers were crimpted in and tried swagging them out--with no luck. Figured they were small primers at this point, but couldn't and still can't figure out why yhey went with small primers. Oh well, back to the drawing board. Thanks again guys!!
