New BC at the range on Saturday
« on: December 22, 2008, 07:40:27 AM »
Well, I took the new BC out to the range on Saturday with the intention of seeing how well it shot, break in the barrel, and just put some big ole chunks of lead downrange.
No sooner did I hit the parking lot...  a norther blows in like the wrath of God.  Jacket at the house, me at the range.
I decided accuracy wasn't on the agenda (open sights, 100 yards, 40MPH wind at 10 o'clock, and me shivering!).
I did put about 20 rounds through it, cycling with cleaning to start breaking the barrel in.  I have the feeling that this beast will shoot where I point it, but i don't have any groups on paper to back that up!

With this being the 1st 45-70 i've owned, and the first one i've shot, I have to say I'm hooked!!  I finally understand what folks are talking about with the recoil with factory loads. Its a real nice push on the shoulder, not bad at all!

Hopefully I can get back out soon and get serious about punching paper to see how this guy shoots!

Load up a 405 Cast Performance with a diaper over 53 grains of Varget. Hold on to the forearm real tight and keep your cheek welded to the stock.  ;D  This will push the 405 a bit over 1700 fps at the muzzle. Yee....Haaa!

Dave

A barrel fouling shot, the second shot...next closest to the bull, adjusted the Williams peep sight, and then I put the next 3 shots as you see. Marlin 1895XLR with the above load.

I'll give the recipe a try as soon as I get my reloading bench set up.

from your instructions on hold the rifle, i'm guessing this is a bit more of a bruiser than the factory loads!!

Re Bruiser:
I'd say!
Considering the standard Rem 405 gr load comes strolling out at 1300fps+ being pushed by 30+ something grains of powder the above load giving 1700 fps will be memorable. ;D

Yeah...."memorable" is a good word to associate with it. There is a load posted somewhere for the Marlin using the Cast Performance 405 grain with a gas check and 55.6 grains of Varget that the fellow stated his crony measured it at a bit over 1900fps.

I wouldn't try that one....but it surely would test your cavity fillings!!!

BTW...I have killed 2 whitetail's with my load and I can say there is no such thing as "bloodtrail" to follow after one shot.  ;D

Realguns has several loads for the 405gr Rem that are over 1900fps, the 405gr Cast Performance loads are a bit milder tho.

I got 27 gr. of 2400 pushing the 405 Rem. shoots well and is not trying to dismember me at the same time.

This is a Lyman load for a 16" Contender giving just a tad under 1400 fps. From a Handi barrel I would presume another 150+ fps
