Blowback costs a buck

I missed the best 8 point I have ever seen night before last.  I'm sure it is because of blowback fouling the firing pin, hammer and trigger.  It was very cold, perhaps 10 above.  I had fired the huntsman a half dozen times the week before rifle season, around the 10th or so of November to check scope, etc.  I then cleaned it, ran Gun Scrubber through the frame, worked the action repeatedly, dried it, gave it a light oil spray, wiped it and put it up.

The firing pin only dimpled the primer.  Of course, when I got back to the barn and emptied it, It fired just fine.  I took the quick and dirty way out.  I put it on a clean shotgun frame and will deal with it in 3 days when the season's over.

I still have time to hunt, and perhaps I'll get him yet.

Sorry to hear that Pete, you didn't drool on the firing pin when you saw that buck, did ya??   A degreased gun with no oil is a better choice than the wrong kinda oil.  Maybe ya need to change gun oil, whatcha using now? Here's a couple to try, number one is Eezox, it has a working range of -95ºF to +450ºF and you won't find a better protectant, although Breakfree CLP is good runner up, it's working range is -65ºF to +475ºF. Or maybe you got a bit of water on the firing pin when you cleaned it last, just enough to causes a problem when it froze?

No Tim, used water only on the breech plug and dried that with a hair dryer.  Put a thin coat of gun oil on the threads and put it back in a clean barrel.  I think drooling on the firing pin is the most likely cause.  He came in with six or seven does and fawns, and one young doe stuck to him like glue.  Always broadside to him for about 10 minutes.  Finally the guy lifts his head high above her winding the air and I put the crosshairs on his neck at 60 yards and...........click.  I've probably shot 1000 rounds without that happening.  He's got to be a spirit deer, protected by the gods of the forest.  My wife would be content with that explanation.

There's still Saturday and Sunday...........   Who knows.  If he doesn't show, I'll put a fat yearling doe in the freezer and if I get super lucky, I may do both.

I guess I don't really know how to express this, but here goes.  It probably sounds pagan, but generally, when we kill a deer, we sprinkle sage on him and thank the Great Spirit for gift he has granted us and ask that he release the deer's spirit to run free in the woods again.  It is the belief of my wife's people, and I think it's a fine thing to do.

Geeeze Pete!  I feel SO bad for you!     But, at least you got the next couple a days to pop the ol' boy!  I wouldn't feel to bad though.  After all, you cain't eat horns!  I'd rather eat a fat hee hee doe any day.     Tell ya what ol' buddy ol' pal... atlaw, got together with a few of the boys after the bucky incident and made a bunch of shims.  If ya run short give us a holler.  I think there's a semi load out there.  You can also stop by, visit and make your own from our stock.  You've got to drain them first.

Forget about what DNR says, the season opens here on the 4th of July and I don't think it ever ends.  Seriously, if you want to do a yankee deer, Yall come.  We'll fix ya right up.  The latch string is out and the venison stew'll be ready.  Ya gotta give me a ride on your hog though.  Pete

Very sorry for the rifle woes. How about looking into the 25ACP breech plug?  I have to say, there is ZERO blow back. The breech is as clean as a whistle. I am VERY VERY IMPRESSED. It is SO nice not to "shmotz" the scope all up after only a few rounds!!!

Well I tore the frame down, and there was no blowback fouling.  It was lube, solidified at 6 above zero.  Too much oil and too cold.  Nuts!!!  Oh well, live and learn.

   Cold weather can get you in a lot of ways. 35 years of using a CVA side hammer in late fall MN Muzzle-loader seasons , [read -20 F.,worst case ], taught me-----  don't try to use the set trigger at all, there isn't room for anything but poly or silk gloves in that trigger-guard and you can't pull the trigger if your fingers have no feeling.  I adjusted the set trigger clear out of the picture and gloved fingers fit.  Now the trigger pull weight was up around 8-10 pounds. I learned to live with it and got deer easily enough that not knowing better didn't really matter. I found this forum ,was intrigued by the things you guys were writing and decided to get me a Huntsman and try one out. That was this last year. My project for next year is to try to learn to shoot this thing and its touchy little trigger before deer season. maybe I will be more successfully than this year. When I get a grip on things I will try adding glove thicknesses to the mix just to see if it can be done. I remember warning my wife about her "hair-trigger" Knight Wolverine . I suppose it might be easier to just move/hunt down south ! Nothing like experiencing all of the little quirks of M/L hunting.     Ken

I love the challenge of ml season, it can be 0 to 50 here in southern MI. Rain one day and then the next you got a foot of snow.

run your rifle dry no oil in cold weather. I use sweet oil  on piviot points and very sparingly
