Yes, for a while, S&W sold Husqvarna made rifles, then later S&W used Japanese ( HOWA ) for its source.
You are right, it is not a '98 action, it is an improved '96 ( or '94, or '38, all the same ) Swedish Mauser action. The action is quite light, and they used an aluminum triggerguard assemby. In his book "Bolt Action Rifles" by Frank DeHass, he describes them quite a bit, and he liked them. I think the lightest version had a schnable forearm, and the more delux version, though heavier, was stocked like yours.
FYI, before S&W imported them, Sears sold rifles ( 51L ) that had the Husqvarna action, with a barrel that I think was supplied by High Standard. I have one of those, and like it very much, although the stock was ruined by a previous owner.
I think the stock was Birch.
To confuse matters a bit, after WW2, Husqvarna also sold sporting rifles built on FN made '98 actions, and of course Husqvarna made the Swedish '96 & '38 rifles, and a target rifle based on the '38, but I forget it's designation.
It's been awhile since I checked, but quite possibly your action is known as the HVA ( at least, the earlier, Sears used that action, maybe the later ones like yours made have had a different designator ), In any event, you have a nice rifle.
