gen1 contender .30-30 load
« on: December 29, 2008, 04:42:45 AM »
i read alot about using 125 or 130 gr. bullets in handloads for the pre G2 contender. i have a few 170gr. RN factory rounds that i use in my marlin 336 rc circa 1949 that i'd like to shoot out of my gen 1 contender in my 10 inch bull barrel. i'm  not expecting any real accuracy but was just asking if it would be ok, safe or not advised due to pressure ?

Any factory load will do fine in a Contender no matter what gen.  Reloads you should consult the manual you took the recipe from.  I am not aware of any 30-30 load that is within the ammo's specs that can hurt a Contender, but I may be wrong,  Folks?

I do not h and load but did notice that Remington has in their Managed Recoil line a 125 grain core-lock for the 30-30. It is a soft point and not the recommended 125 grain NBT.  I was wondering if anyone has tried it in their G2 pistol?  Thanks Gary

I reload the 30-30 for my 14" contender and use the Thompson reloading guide their loads are hotter than most factory loads.  I start at their low end and work up for best accuracy for the bullet wt I'm using, most loadings end up at around factory specs, some are slightly higher, but below the recommended max.  For pistol loads the manual states "for T/C and ruger only" so I would feel safe with any factory loaded ammo.

i just checked my Hodgedons manual and in the back is a section for the Contender. sure enough, they list loads that are hotter then the rest of the manual for other chamberings and so i should be ok with the 170 grainers.
i guess i had a brain fart, should have checked my manual.  ::) ..
but i read that you have a thompson manual ? i'll think i need to check into getting one of those too.
thanks, glenn

ANY factory load should be save for your Contender, AND you can expect excellent accuracy from it!   ;D

Most of the loads that are specifically for the Contender are optimized for the short barrels.  They will shoot great with factory loads, but the are fantastic with handloads.
