Next years calendar-disscussion
« on: December 17, 2008, 09:42:45 AM »
Well I have all but two pictures for the 2009 calendar...anybody have contact with Fluxion tell him to hurry.

Next year I am going to restrict a post to one picture.   This is to make it easier for me to put the poll together and keep track of which picture is which. It also provides me a time stamp for ties for each picture--first posted wins tie.

I also have several issues for you to discuss. I have several of these issues and the solution to one may resolve another, so I will lay them out one at a time.

1. Should we limit the of entries?

  • One entry per person?
  • One entry per cannon?

Your thoughts?

One entry per cannon. That should make the entries more artistic.

I think the original rules were that it was one entry per cannon and the cannon had to be yours.

I just checked the 2007 and 2008 rules, they said "your cannon" singular and the rules speak to singular.  But they do not say only one cannon per picture.  Should they?

You just lost me. Do you mean one cannon per image?  I liked the submission with multiple pieces in the one image. It's nice to see what's out there. Let's face it. If there are too many limitations, we will be doing a 10 month calendar. For all of the hardware that's out there, there were few submissions. I want to see artillery.

There were 49 pictures posted of as best I can tell 29 different pieces.

I agree there should be some limits, but at what point do we limit creativity?

Each entry should be unique. Different angles of the same shot may not be unique, but the same cannon in a totally different setting could be.

Limiting to one gun in a photo could exclude some very good action or competition photos where there are guns in the frame other than the poster's. And it would exclude all collections.

These are not endorsements or recommendations, just observations.

Personally, I think if there must be a limit set, then "one entry per cannon" would be the most fair.

Personally, I think that multiple cannons, mortars, or what have you should be allowed per picture. Furthermore, I think that a single picture of each of the cannons, mortars, or whathave you from the multiple picture should also be allowed. For instance a shot of a collection and then a single shot of each piece individually. I think the "one shot of each piece" is plenty fair, it will encourage a careful look at a submission before sending.
I am assuming we want as many pics to choose from as possible. I tend to really like naval carriages but it seems Graybeard likes field carriages.

No puns were intended in the above post. This is probably not worth $.02, but it is my opinion...

One entry per cannon.  The problem is different views of the same cannon getting voted into the calendar.  Maybe it should be phrased "one picture of any given piece per calendar."

I would allow as many pictures of a given cannon/mortar as one wants to submit, but only print one in the calendar - unless there was OVERWHELMING support (or reason) to publish 2.

Pictures can be selected by individuals for any number of resons.  Popularity is a good indicator for selection but not necessarily the only one.

The pix this year were MUCH better photographically (composition, lighting etc.), and yet one person didn't pick but a few because he didn't see many he liked the style of cannon/mortar.   Hmmm.

I prefer to give some editorial license to the person(s) putting together the calendar - as in the situation this year of having two or three shots of a cannon maybe edging out a shot of a unique (to the selection here) piece that is photographicly a strong shot.

If someone makes multiple posts with a different picture of the same cannon in different poses, shall we accept only one picture of this cannon on the calendar, the one with the most votes, even if other pictures of this cannon get more votes than other cannons?

If the rules are stated before the game starts, whatEVER rules there are - they are fair.

I contend that I as an individual, I pick picture by picture - one at a time.

However the person(s) putting together the calendar has the responsibility to look at the content of the calendar as a whole; hence the perspective of looking at the content as a whole MAY be different than the collection of a bunch of good folks looking at one picture at a time.

I further think that it's a difficult matter to write a set of rules that will yield an optimal calendar, hence the NEED for a little flexibility in giving the editorial function to an individual or committee.

If you stick with the original rules with one picture per cannon and as many cannons you like, but they have to be yours.
No editing just voting.
If you have three pictures of one gun, one has to be the best.  Send that one in.

With the value of the dollar as it is, that's my nickles worth.

The majority seems to be one picture per cannon. I think that is fair. However, a person should be able to submit multiple pictures, for viewing, and the selection group could decide on the one that would be included for the final cut. Also, if a "group photo" (multiple cannons, mortars, howitzers) is submitted, depending on quality of photo, that could also be considered, as long as one piece was selected to be "representive" of the lot. That means that individual photos of each one of the "group" should accompany the group shot. Might get more photos submittaed, cause I know there are lots of them out there! Just one of my opinions, for  it's 2 cents worth! BoomLover

As in any capitalistic venture, the producer takes a risk that the customers will not agree with his decisions.

It would be interesting to know if the people who voted for multiple images of a single cannon realized it was the same cannon.  I think a calendar with 13 pix of the same gun (the ultimate extreme) starts to become a photography collection rather than a cannon collection.

Well Gents the 2009 calendar  is out.  Go to http://www.cafepress.com/gbollc/2319361  to order.

I wasn't very interested in doing the calendar this year so things got out of whack. For that I apologize. I am fully in retired mode now and will pay attention to business this year.

In a bit I will post the new rules for the 2010 calendar.

In order to adress all the little issues that come up in making the calendar, I have changed the rules. Please read the rules carefully. The rules are there to give every one an equal chance to get their cannon on the calendar. And the they are there to make it easy for Matt and I to recover the pictures and prepare the calendar.

One very important change is that we are asking you to save your pictures on you computer at minumum dimension of 1078 x 768  pixels. Matt had a difficult time fitting some pictures to the calendar as the sumbitted pictures were to small.

One thing you will note I am going to be deleting post that don't comply. I will try and send a PM telling you why I deleted a post and tell you what you have to do to resubmit. Best way to avoid this is to read the rules first.

I have also adressed the consensus.  Only one picture per cannon allowed and it must be your cannon.

Now go buy a calendar
