Caseless Ammo
« on: March 02, 2009, 06:32:55 PM »
Any one ever deal with caseless ammo? Any input beyond what I can Google would be cool. I am curious to know if there was ever a civilian implementation of this technology.

Try going to wikipedia and type "gyro jet" into the search block.

I know you may not believe me but I have fired a gyrojet before. I actually have a frame for one and about 200rds of ammo for one.

Crazy pistol.

Instant ignition, yet slight delay of the exiting projectile. The ballistics actually rise instead of fall due to the fact the projectile gets lighter as the propellant is burned. They look like tracer  ammo that seems to speed up as they travel down range. They make an interesting whining noise at times. Ammo is not produced and is very expensive due the the collector value. Several rounds we fired were duds. Still worth seeing even though we felt guilty 'wasting" ammo.

Oh how I would love to play more. I cannot tell you what the energy to the target even looks like. We fired our rounds into the sea as not to set anything on fire. Rounds seem to stay 'lit' when shot into the air and could see them glow half way down as they fell out of the sky. Range was not to impressive. If I were to guess the energy was not great enough to be of military/hunting use. Sure as heck would not want to receive a hit by one.   :o   This is all speculation. I did not have a target such as a piece of wood or phonebook to shoot into. Nor did I have a crono. Just basing my experience off experience with regular weopons.  I just cant bring myself to use anymore ammo. Sorry.

I think I have some pics and I will post them when I find them.

The caseless ammo I was pondering was for a bolt action rifle. Hear talk of electrically ignited propellant.

Daisy ( yes bb gun) came out with a 22 called the VL. Used caseless ammo. I have a box somewhere in my stash. Came out in the late 60's early 70's maybe?? (please correct me)

It was 1968. BATF made them stop because it was deemed as a firearm and they were not licensed to manufacture it.

Caseless would be really good as far as its simplicity.
I don't know how it would stack up as far as accuracy goes.
I bet many of us would open that bolt on a caseless and reach for the brass anyway.
Haha.

I found a couple of videos of people firing the gyrojet on youtube.
Shoots different than the one I shot.

I have a couple rounds of caseless 223. Its only a 223 in balistics as the cartridge is much smaller. Nut even 218 bee in total size. I had the gun in hand and got to fire it a couple times.

Pretty neat!!
