Stevens 200...6.5-284
« on: December 05, 2008, 02:01:23 PM »
I need your guys help... I am wanting to build a new rifle and thought I might involve you guys and some possibly "better ideas" then mine.
I have a Stevens 200 that I want to rebarrel to 6.5-284. I am going to go at this one a hundred percent myself. I am having a hard time deciding on which barrel manf. to go with. I have heard many "good" things about other manf. I have a couple rifles with Kriger barrels and love them. BUT, they do not make a drop in. I am looking for something in a varmint weight, stainless, and ready to screw on. Any idea's?

Some of the items I want but am still looking for is a larger bolt handle and an aftermarket recoil lug. Please help me find the the ones you would put on it.

Also I am thinking a Duramaxx stock from B&C in NatGear snow but am open to other ideas as to which stock to put on it.
Thanks!!I will show the final results when it is finished!

I've got Shilen and McGowen prefits on a couple Savages and would definately buy more.  Heard good things about PacNor and Lothar Walther though I don't own either, LW may have a barrel in stock even.  The Duramaxx is definately better than the factory stock and B&C's medalists are supposed to be nice.  If you are set on synthetic you might look at Stockade, and McMillan inlets for Savages also.  You should talk to SSS or Joel Russo if interested in a laminate stock.  SSS and Stockade both sell large bolt handles or you can get the factory oversized piece.  SSS , Stockade and Northland Shooters all sell recoil lugs.  SSS makes great triggers also.

If you want a repeater and are going to use the long/heavy bullets I would suggest using a long action if you aren't already planning to.

Your first post said you wanted a varmint barrel so I didn't know weight was a big concern.  If you get ahold of Jim at Northland Shooters you can get a Shilen or McGowen 26" stainless match grade barrel for $269.  He can get you some of the other items you are looking for as well.  B&C's carbelite stock is a little lighter than the duramaxx I think, it comes with a sporter barrel inlet also unlike the duramaxx.

Great Idea, I have my sons stevens 200 sitting next to me that is going to get the same treatment. We are thinking 28" barrel in 6.5X284. I allready have the barrel wrench and action vice as I have a 110 i converted from 223 to 220 swift.

Really simplem I made my own action vice and bought a wrench from midway. Just put your action in the vice, take a torch and heat the barrel nut just enough to break the factory lock tight and give the wrench a sharp rap hit a mallot and viola. (it was many many years before I knew viola was a fancy way of writing walah) ;D Sorry had to share my stupid with ya all.

Do you have an idea of how your magazine will feed with the 284 case?  I,m a new 200 owner (7-08), and after I get .338 Fed and >257 Rbts. bbls, I want a good 6.5 round.  The 6.5-284 is a real good round.  I will only be looking for hunting accuracy, so plan on going with E R Shaw barrels.  $150.00 ready to go in almost any chambering you could want.

I have done 3 Stevens 200 conversions,250/3000,257 Roberts,and 220 Swift.
The only drop-in was the 220 Swift. I read everything I could about E.R. Shaw.
The reviews were quite varied from P.O.S. to Fantastic. On the whole the opinion is that the barrels are not bench rest quality. In spite of that I used their Savage Varmint Weight drop-in. My completed 220 Swift shoots sub-moa out to 300yds. I won't have field experience until June when I go to Texas PD shooting. Go to Shaw's web site and read about their products. The only complaint I have is 12 weeks delivery.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING in the "HAPPY NEW YEAR"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
