Marlin 917V range report
« on: November 28, 2008, 04:04:15 PM »
Got out today with the new 917.  Just had a little time to play while thinning out some trees on the father-in-law's land.  Put a Simmons Master Series Pro Hunter 3-10x44 on it, and tried the V-max 17gr and the CCi 17gr hollowpoints.

As usual (in the 3 different HMR's I've had) the V-Max outshot the CCi by a wide margin.

At 60 yds, the CCi's were going under an inch, not too bad, since I wasn't using a bench, just shooting sticks while sitting.

First group with the V-Max's, 3 shots were in one hole, the called flyer was about 1/8" out, too bad I didn't have the calipers with me to measure it.  I estimated it at around .25" center to center, maybe a bit less.  Best 60 yd group I've shot with anything.  I quit right there in homage of that group.

Later on, went 3 for 3 on squirrels, including one at 100 yds offhand.  Got that one through the shoulders, still basically tore it in half.  Glad that the F-I-L was there to witness that one.   Defintely my best offhand shot of all time.  ;D

Yes, this rifle can shoot.

similar results with mine the first time i took them out. tack drivers. didn't waste any tightening up the pattern.
not real excited about the price of ammo  :o, but most of it is used for hunting so it's dollars on task.  ;D

Can you get 50yds?  It should hit around an 1/2" high at 50 to be dead on at 100, but different scope/ring heights can make it hit differently.  You need to have the scope mounted as low as possible.  Another possibility is that you might be pulling the gun a bit when you're shooting at 100 yds with your 30yd zero.  I think that you were good to go with your 100 yd zero, honestly.  1/2" low at 30yds isn't going to make you miss anything at such close range.

Next trip out to the range bring a 5 pound bag of potatoes with you.  You will like what the 17 grain bullets do.
Best if you let someone else shoot one first.  You will be amaized at what happens.  Same with a lemon or lime.

The potatoes are better trust me.  With the 17 at about 50 yards the potato turns into a white ball about 4 to 5 feet round.  They also have that bullet hitting flesh thawwak to them.  They are boidegradable and you do not get funny looks from the recyceling guy when you bring him a bunch a twisted and contorted cans.
The cheap 2 liter bottles are really cool as targets too.  Get the red fruit punch.   Huge red spray everywhere. ;)
