successfully hunted with my new browning model 78 last night
« on: December 03, 2008, 12:39:45 PM »
just a little before dark the big doe stepped into the opening at about 35 yards from my muzzle. the 45-70 spoke something in a deep voice as it spit out its 325 grain bullet. At the shot she seemed to freeze in a crouched position just before she wheelied up and over  kind of a side ways back flip...and that was that. I was quite supprised that seh didn't run, at least a little bit. The bullet entered the near "point" of the shoulder and exited center of the ribcage on the other side... a quartering toward shot. I'd of waited for a more broadside shot but she had the wind and had stopped moving, so I thought it was time to pick-a-spot and start squeezing. Is that typical 45-70 performance?

Yes that is typical for the .45-70 and it's tremendous energy on impact. However, I think it was more shot placement in this case. I have made the same shot with a .222 and had the same results. I love my B78 as well. Good luck hunting.

If they don't tump over at the shot, they will not go far and you won't have any trouble trailing them with the big ole in AND out holes. That is the result unless you make a very poor shot like shooting off the end of the flag or some such.
