Just some background about myself; I'm 42, love to hunt,fish, trap. I've only been trapping about 3 years now and can't get enough of it. I mostly land trap. I work in an aluminum smelter in WV (21 shift) hard to get as much trapping done as i'd like. I live right on the Ohio River in Mason County, not alot of beaver in my area just enough to make a person envious.

 I have heard you have some good sized Muskrat in your state. Have you tried for any of them?
 Combine beaver and rats, and you may just become addicted to water trapping.

Yeah Bog I pulled 1 small beaver last year from the river with a 330.  This year  i aint went after them. I've caught 11 rats in creeks and a farm pond close to the house. Yeah there's not alot of rats, most of the rats 've caught measured around 18".   1 barely hung over both ends of a 5 gal. bucket before being skinned.

The Ohio is a pretty good sized river, with a lot of barge traffic and fluctuating water levels. Theres a few backwater inlets that I can trap, sign is hard to find, but it's there. The banks on the river here are almost straight up for a couple feet then the watergoes from a few inches to several feet in a hurry. I've found fresh cuttings on the banks but cant really tell where the beavs are coming in and out or I'd set those. Any suggestions?

 Yep,get some good castor based beaver lure.Make some castor mound sets--and bring the beavers to you.Easiest way to get them.

     I'll probably pull most of my land traps today, I had 2 walked off with yesterday(rabbit hunters). I made some phone calls and finally found out who took them and confronted them and talked to the CO, the traps are going to be returned today. At the present time I only have 2- 330's and 4- # 3's that i can use for front foot catch maybe set some snares for the beavers.

float sets for rats will work for the fluncuating water problem.i've had the same problem before,barges making waves will trip coni's in pockets and blind sets.worked in nebraska on the mighty mo,should work on the ohio!!

  Thanks Jim I aint tried floats in th river yet. Gonna try for my hand at a few beaver sets in about 2 hours as soon as i get off "work". ;)
