new to the contender
« on: January 07, 2009, 01:25:54 PM »
Just got me a  contender/super 14 ,223 cal , shot it today and wow ,I couldn't believe how good this hits. I now am hooked on this thing and cant wait until tomorrow to shoot some different loads.  I found a super 14 in 35 rem with scope mounted on a G2 model. will this barrel fit on my contender it is up for grabs. thought I might like to take a deer with this.  Also did any of the G2  models come with the cougar engraved on them or only the older contenders.

All the barrels for Contenders and the G2 are made to interghange (except for the muzzle loader barrel which was desiged for the G2 only). The only engraving I have ever seen on a G2 was custom done.

The G2 barrels will fit most Contenders, however some problems have been encountered with the earliest Contenders and the G2 barrels, TC upgraded the lug lockup on the later models and the G2 and some problems with lockup have been encountered.  Only the Contender had the engraving; the G2 and Encore were plain, unless ordered custom.  I have the 14" barrel in 223 and used it a few years ago to shoot prairie dogs in South Dakota at ranges from 50yds to 150 yds and it was very effective and so much fun, I ran out of ammo.

The G2 barrels fit the old models as far as I know except the muzzel loader.  As far as I know the cougar is the old frame only.  But if you can lower the hammer and reset it with out opening the frame then it's a G2.
Watch what 223 loads you shoot.  Anything with a FMJ bullet may have too much pressure and you will see signs when you try to open the gun.  Don't ask how I know.  But 223 is OK, 5.56 Nato is not.
I was bitten hard byt the TC bug as well and just bought four barrels in the last four months.  If you see barrels for sale by Tad Huston Buy them if you want them.  So far I have purchased two from him If he says the are 90% they are 99%.  Great guy to deal with.
But all of the guys on the site have been great so far in helping me.
Welcome to the sickness.

Welcome to the TC crowd, they really are great pistols. Like the man above said, Tad Houston is an alright guy, dealt with him a little.

Be careful when letting your significant-other find out about your new hobby (should read "addiction" as you will soon find out.)  You have opportunity to purchase many different calibers and barrel lengths.  Since most of these barrels look alike, you can start to accumulate multiple barrels and will seemingly walk out the door with the same gun each time.  Just like women and their black shoes.  They have 20 pair, but we husbands always think they are wearing the same shoes.

After about the 5th new barrel, you will have to purchase a second frame, but again, it will look the same as the first, so you can still have multiple guns while seemingly only having one.

If you obtain an alternative color (stainless frame in addition to a blue frame), you will have to then purchase additional barrels to match.  This will be obvious to you and your buddies, but your wife may not notice the difference in color.  Just like us husbands don't always notice the difference between their black shoes, navy shoes, or dark brown shoes.

Another thing you will need to do is to purchase a very large gun case.  Show the significant other the gun case with the first contender in it.  Show her how the ear muffs, binoculars, ammo, targets, stapler, etc all fit in the one gun case.  As you accumulate more barrels and frames, you can gradually swap out your range items and leave them in your truck.  She wont be the wiser until you start to lean as you walk.  A simple solution to this is to buy two gun cases to start with so you can always walk equally loaded.

Have fun and enjoy your contender.  Welcome to the addiction!!

WARNING!!!   As Steve P said, these T/C's are very addicting.
You will see why very soon. You can't have too many.  ;D ;D
