Scope suggestion`s for TC.38 Spec barrel.
« on: January 04, 2009, 12:39:07 PM »
I have a TC 8" custom barrel manufactured by SSK in the .38 Spec. configuration. Any suggestions on what type of low power scope might be suitable for this length of barrel? This will be used for varmints and small game!

Most of my fixed power, low power scopes are Leupold M8 2X which I use for big game(deer).  For varmits and small game I would find the 2X( it's actually only about 1.5X ) a little wanting.  I much prefer and reccomend the Burris or Leupold 4X.  I'm not sure that Burris still makes that scope....I hope so....I have several and like them a lot, but they all have at least 10 years use on them( with zero problems too )  Leupold 4X is good too, but for some reason, I prefer the Burris in 4X and the Leupold in 2X.  Most folks these days prefer the variable power....I'm just not one of them.

BTW  I love your caliber selection for varmits and small game.  For about 50 yards or less, a soft lead wadcutter in .38spc. is tops!!!  DRT

The only reason I would consider a variable power scope that goes up to higher power is for paper-punching.  A 4X would be great for your purposes.  However, it is a lot of fun to shoot holes and be able to see them at 50 yards or so!

8" .38 special?  Nice.

Mine is a 7" .357 magnum.

I've always liked the 2X scopes. More magnification just seems to magnify the wobbles. right now my 9" .357 Encore (my .357 'test' gun) wears a 2X Burris posi-lock handgun scope.

My 7" G2 gets my Millet 1" red dot sight. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=459296
It was inexpensive, but it's small and light.

A traditional scope is going to look mighty big on an 8" barrrel.

Hopalong,Dezynco,Hammerhead,
Thanks guys for your input!I was doing some rearranging of my shooting gear yesterday and lo and behold I found a Leupold 2x pistol scope! So I will try this on that barrel, and if that doesn`t look good I will probably try the Millet red dot!

The Leupy 2X is about as compact as it gets...should balance up well.  Let us know how that barrel works out.  I'd have to think a SSK chambered barrel in 38spl. would have to be one shootin' son of a gun.  Walt
